Two full nights of digging. Fourteen days inside. Nine square metres for four men, and not enough headroom to stand up.
A covered observation hide is one of the oldest tools in #reconnaissance, and one of the least glamorous. You dig a hole roughly 130 to 140 centimetres deep, roof it with rough timber, bury it, and then live in it.
The building is the hard part. Two nights, and most of that isn't the digging — it's moving the spoil. Freshly turned subsoil is pale, and pale earth is visible at night. Every shovelful gets carried away in rucksacks, sandbags, whatever holds weight, then scattered thin somewhere else and dusted over. Leave a heap and the whole position is worthless before anyone has occupied it.
What you get for that work is a slot. A gap a few centimetres high between the roof timbers and the lip of the earth, and through it, a letterbox view of everything you were sent to watch. The optics stay back in the shadow — a lens pushed into daylight catches the sun and undoes two nights of work.
Inside, it's shifts. Two men working the radio in rotation while two more trade off on the slot, around the clock. Nobody sleeps through a night. The floor is trodden soil, the ceiling is close enough to touch lying down, and there is no free space to move past each other.
And everything stays. Rations, batteries, packaging — and human waste, sealed in gelling pouches and kept in the corner until you leave. Nothing gets buried, because buried things get found. The stack of unused pouches in the corner is its own kind of clock: when they run low, so does your time on target.
Then you fill it in, scatter the timber, put the ground cover back, and walk away leaving a patch of forest floor that's very slightly darker than the ground around it. That's the best result available.
Why go through all of it? Because aerial reconnaissance gives you a moment. This gives you two weeks — patterns, routines, the difference between a convoy passing once and a convoy passing every night at the same hour.

A soldier in thermal camouflage was killed after a drone's daylight camera picked him up. The heat sensor had lost him completely.
That single detail explains most of what has changed about hiding on a battlefield.
For a century, concealment meant defeating a human eye. Break your outline, match your background, stay still. Reconnaissance was built on it. Camouflage, hides, movement discipline — all of it assumes that if nobody sees you, you're safe.
Thermal imaging doesn't care what you wear. Colour and pattern mean nothing to a heat sensor; what registers is a warm body against cold ground. Front-line soldiers now say plainly that camouflage matters less than it used to, because thermal drones find you anyway.
The counter exists. Thermal cloaks, ponchos and blankets — layered fabrics with metal filaments that hold body heat in, so the wearer reads as part of the landscape. They work. They're being issued to reconnaissance units, assault groups and sniper teams. The good ones cost up to two thousand dollars apiece, which is why cheaper local versions are being produced, and why hunting ponchos and even camping equipment get used instead.
But every solution answers one sensor.
Optical: shape, outline, movement. Thermal: body heat. Radio: every transmission has a direction. And increasingly, software trained to recognise what a human being looks like from above.
A blanket ticks one box. Whatever is overhead usually carries at least two.
So what replaces invisibility?
Time. Effective detection isn't measured by how far away the threat is — it's measured in the number of seconds you have to do something useful. Which means shorter tasks, faster reporting, more dispersion, and the assumption that concealment buys minutes rather than safety.
Assume you are seen. Then decide what that costs them.
