Do you still use your GoPro, or change to DJI? 📷
In 2025, two Chinese companies took over 80% of the action camera market.
GoPro went from defining the category to a distant third.
Here's what happened:
In 2016, GoPro tried to build a drone called Karma
— directly challenging DJI.
It was a disaster. Recalled within a month.
DJI looked at that and said:
"If they can try making our product, we can definitely make theirs."
And they could — because drones need tiny cameras
that stay stable while shaking violently at high speed.
Put that into an action camera? Easy mode.
Then Insta360 did the same thing from a different angle —
years of 360° imaging technology, pointed at a regular action camera.
Two Chinese companies.
Two technologies built for harder problems.
Both moved DOWN into GoPro's market.
GoPro tried to move UP into theirs.
Only one direction worked.
I bet your next action camera will be DJI or Insta360.
The real question is — do you want to be inside
the company that's falling behind, or the one pulling ahead?
But I haven't told you the biggest part yet —
HOW do they make it better AND cheaper?
That's about a city, not a company. Next video.
Send this to a friend whose GoPro is collecting dust 😅
