Apple just entered the foldable phone race, seven years after Samsung, and Samsung was ready.
The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first ever foldable, was unveiled today at the company’s Surprise and Shine event in Cupertino, featuring a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display, Apple Pencil support, and a starting price of $1,999. Pre-orders open October 16.
Samsung Mobile US went straight to work on X, posting throughout the entire event. “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers,” they posted, before pivoting to apologize to Duolingo directly: “I’m so sorry, @Duolingo. They copied us too. #Solidarity.” Duolingo jumped in immediately, joking that Apple named the phone after them.
Samsung also posted a “Welcome to Foldables” video hours before the event, and a Samsung executive said seeing Apple enter the market made them feel “very proud” that the value they pioneered was being “acknowledged and recognized.”
Pre-orders open October 16, the device ships October 23.
