Think about what is happening here. We are moving from asking a machine to find information to asking it questions about morality, faith, Scripture and God.
And AI isn't only entering the pews. It's entering the pulpit.
New 2026 research found that nearly one in four U.S. pastors now use AI to write or edit sermons, a percentage that has nearly doubled in just two years.
Using technology to locate a Bible passage or research historical information is one thing. Allowing generative artificial intelligence to participate in writing the message delivered from the pulpit as the teaching of God's Word is something very different.
A machine can search Scripture faster than any pastor. It can analyze thousands of sermons, imitate someone's writing style and produce a beautifully structured message in seconds. But it cannot pray. It cannot seek God. It cannot receive discernment from the Holy Spirit. Yet its words may now be spoken from pulpits to congregations who have no idea a machine helped put them there.
So where does technological assistance end and spiritual outsourcing begin?
While all of this is happening, the people building and studying these systems are confronting questions that would have sounded ridiculous only a few years ago. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has reportedly brought religious scholars and philosophers into discussions about whether artificial intelligence could potentially be conscious, possess moral status or experience something resembling human emotion.
