👉Did You Know? Ethiopia’s First Nile Dam Study Began Over 60 Years Ago
📌 Between 1958–1964, the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), at the request of Emperor Haile Selassie, carried out the first scientific dam study on the Nile inside Ethiopia.
🔎 They identified four giant dam sites with huge hydropower potential:
1️⃣ Karadobi Dam – Upper Abbay Gorge, north of Abay Sheleko (near Oromia–Amhara border).
2️⃣ Mabil Dam – Middle Abbay, between Mota and Debre Markos areas.
3️⃣ Mandaya Dam – Lower Abbay, upstream of the Sudan border, in Benishangul-Gumuz region.
4️⃣ Border Dam – Directly on the Ethiopia–Sudan border, the very site later chosen for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
⚡ These studies showed Ethiopia has over 30,000 MW hydropower potential — one of the greatest in Africa!
🇪🇹 The GERD is not a new dream — it is the realization of plans made over six decades ago.
