💫A Dummy Level (more accurately known as a Dumpy Level or, more commonly today, an Automatic Level) is an optical surveying instrument primarily used for levelling.

⏺Levelling involves determining or verifying points that are on the same horizontal plane, or accurately measuring the differences in height (elevations) between various points on the ground.

🏷Key Features and How it Works:

*   Telescope: It features a high-magnification telescope mounted on a stable base.
*   Horizontal Line of Sight: Its core function is to establish a truly horizontal line of sight.
    *   Dumpy Level (Older Type): Required manual adjustment using a highly sensitive spirit level bubble to ensure the telescope was perfectly horizontal.
    *   Automatic Level (Modern Type): Incorporates an internal compensator. This is a clever system of prisms and wires (often suspended magnetically or by fine threads) that automatically corrects and maintains a perfectly horizontal line of sight, even if the instrument itself is slightly tilted on its tripod.
