π Dead Load vs Live Load (ACI Code)
π© Dead Load (DL):
βΊPermanent load on a structure.
βΊIncludes self-weight of beams, slabs, columns, walls, and finishes.
βΊDoes not change during building life.
βΊACI Factor (USD): 1.2 Γ DL
π₯ Live Load (LL):
βΆοΈTemporary or movable load.
πIncludes weight of people, furniture, vehicles, wind, or snow.
π°Varies with usage or time.
βΆοΈACI Factor (USD): 1.6 Γ LL
β Design Load Combination (ACI 318): 1.2 DL + 1.6 LL
π Summary:
βΆοΈDL = Permanent load (structure weight)
π²LL = Variable load (occupancy & use)

πWhat is Slump Test and Why It Matters?
πDefinition: The Slump Test is a simple test used to measure the workability and consistency
of fresh concrete before placing it in formwork.
π«Purpose:
β’ To check the uniformity of concrete from batch to batch.
β’ To ensure proper water-cement ratio and desired workability.
Equipment Used:
β’ Slump cone (300mm high, 200mm bottom dia, 100mm top dia)
β’ Tamping rod (16mm dia, 600mm long)
β’ Base plate and measuring scale
πProcedure:
1. Fill the cone with fresh concrete in 3 layers, each tamped 25 times.
2. Remove the cone vertically and measure the subsidence (slump) of concrete.
3. The difference in height gives the slump value (in mm).
βοΈTypes of Slump:
β’ True Slump β Concrete subsides uniformly.
β’ Shear Slump β Concrete slides sideways (indicates poor cohesion).
β’ Collapse Slump β Concrete completely collapses (too wet mix).
Typical Slump Values:
β’ Mass Concrete: 25β50 mm
β’ Reinforced Foundation: 50β100 mm
β’ Slabs & Beams: 75β125 mm
β’ Pumped Concrete: 100β150 mm
π₯Importance:
βΊThe slump test ensures proper workability, reduces segregation risk, and confirms concrete quality before casting.

πTESTS FOR SAND
π«1. Sieve Analysis Test
βΊUsed to determine the particle size distribution of sand. Pass sand through sieves
(4.75 mm to 150 Β΅m). Helps to classify as fine, medium, or coarse.
π«2. Silt Content Test
βΊDetermines the percentage of silt or clay in sand.
βΊMix 50 ml sand with 50 ml water in a cylinder, shake, and settle for 3β4 hours.
βΊSilt should not exceed 8%.
π«3. Bulking of Sand Test
βΊChecks the increase in sand volume due to moisture.
βΊAdd small amount of water
and note the volume change. Normal bulking = 10β25%.
π«4. Specific Gravity Test
βΊDetermines density ratio of sand compared to water. Ideal specific gravity = 2.6 β2.7.
π«5. Organic Impurities Test
βΊChecks for organic matter or clay.
βΊMix sand with NaOH solution; brown color indicates impurities.
π«6. Moisture Content Test
βΊFinds the amount of water in sand.
βΊDry the sample at 110Β°C and calculate moisture % using weight difference.
π«7. Fineness Modulus Test
βΊIndicates sand quality and gradation.
βΊFM = (Cumulative % retained on sieves) /100. Fine sand = 2.2β2.6, Coarse = 2.6β2.9.
π·Good quality sand ensures strong and durable concrete.
