πWhat is FM in Sieve Analysis? π€
π«FM = Fineness Modulus β itβs an index number representing the average particle size of aggregate.
π§Itβs calculated by adding the cumulative % retained on standard sieves and dividing by 100.
π Effect of FM on Concrete:
βΊHigher FM β Coarser aggregate β Less water demand, but may reduce workability.
βΊLower FM β Finer aggregate β Higher water demand, better workability but more shrinkage.
β Ideal FM Range for Sand: 2.3 β 3.1 (for good concrete mix)
β Too high or too low FM can affect strength, durability, and finishing of concrete.

πTESTS FOR SAND
π«1. Sieve Analysis Test
βΊUsed to determine the particle size distribution of sand. Pass sand through sieves
(4.75 mm to 150 Β΅m). Helps to classify as fine, medium, or coarse.
π«2. Silt Content Test
βΊDetermines the percentage of silt or clay in sand.
βΊMix 50 ml sand with 50 ml water in a cylinder, shake, and settle for 3β4 hours.
βΊSilt should not exceed 8%.
π«3. Bulking of Sand Test
βΊChecks the increase in sand volume due to moisture.
βΊAdd small amount of water
and note the volume change. Normal bulking = 10β25%.
π«4. Specific Gravity Test
βΊDetermines density ratio of sand compared to water. Ideal specific gravity = 2.6 β2.7.
π«5. Organic Impurities Test
βΊChecks for organic matter or clay.
βΊMix sand with NaOH solution; brown color indicates impurities.
π«6. Moisture Content Test
βΊFinds the amount of water in sand.
βΊDry the sample at 110Β°C and calculate moisture % using weight difference.
π«7. Fineness Modulus Test
βΊIndicates sand quality and gradation.
βΊFM = (Cumulative % retained on sieves) /100. Fine sand = 2.2β2.6, Coarse = 2.6β2.9.
π·Good quality sand ensures strong and durable concrete.
