ACI 117-10 โ Tolerances for Cast-in-Place Concrete Section 4: (pages. 31โ44)
Even the best construction sites canโt achieve absolute perfection and thatโs why ACI 117-10 defines allowable tolerances to ensure quality, safety, and constructability.
Hereโs a concise, field-focused breakdown of Section 4
๐น 4.1 โ Deviation from Plumb
Definition:
How much a vertical element (column or wall) may lean from a true vertical line.
ACI Limit:
ยฑ25 mm per 3 m (10 ft) of height
Maximum ยฑ50 mm total
For architectural concrete: ยฑ6 mm per 3 m
Example:
Column height = 4.5 m โ (4.5 รท 3) ร 25 = 37.5 mm
โ The column can lean up to 37 mm from vertical.
If measured by theodolite and the top is 20 mm off the base โ โ within tolerance.
๐น 4.2 โ Deviation from Location
Definition:
Horizontal offset from the designed grid or layout line.
ACI Limit:
ยฑ25 mm for structural members (columns, walls, footings)
ยฑ13 mm for architectural or tight-fit elements
Example:
Design gridline at X = 10,000 mm โ actual = 10,018 mm โ shift = 18 mm โ โ acceptable.
๐น 4.3 โ Not Used
Reserved for future use - no requirements in ACI 117-10.
๐น 4.4 โ Deviation from Elevation
Definition:
Difference between the actual top elevation and the specified design elevation.
ACI Limit:
ยฑ13 mm for general structural surfaces
ยฑ6 mm for architectural or critical connections
Example:
Design top of slab = +100.000 m
Actual = +100.011 m โ difference = +11 mm โ โ within tolerance.
๐น 4.5 โ Deviation from Cross-Sectional Dimensions
Definition:
Difference between actual and design dimensions (width, thickness, or depth).
ACI Limit:
Structural: +13 mm / โ6 mm
Architectural: ยฑ6 mm
Example:
Design wall thickness = 200 mm
Measured = 207 mm โ +7 mm โ โ OK
Measured = 192 mm โ โ8 mm โ โ exceeds tolerance.
๐น 4.6 โ Formed Openings (Width/Height)
Definition:
Tolerance for door, window, or duct openings.
ACI Limit: ยฑ13 mm both directions
Example:
Design = 500 ร 400 mm โ measured = 510 ร 392 mm โ โ within ยฑ13 mm.
๐น 4.7 โ Stair Risers and Treads
Definition:
Ensures uniform step height and tread width for safety and comfort.
ACI Limit:
Riser variation: ยฑ6 mm between adjacent steps
Tread variation: ยฑ6 mm
Total cumulative variation โค 13 mm per flight
Example:
Risers = 171, 169, 172, 170 mm โ max difference = 3 mm โ โ acceptable.
๐น 4.8 โ Deviation from Slope or Plane
Definition:
Controls flatness and intended slope on horizontal surfaces (floors, ramps, roofs).
ACI Limit:
ยฑ6 mm in 3 m for interior floors
ยฑ13 mm in 3 m for exterior or drainage surfaces
Example:
Design ramp slope = 2% โ expected height diff = 60 mm per 3 m
Measured = 63 mm โ โ within tolerance.
๐น 4.9 โ Sawcut Depth (Slab-on-Ground)
Definition:
Depth of contraction joints (sawcuts) used to control cracking.
ACI Requirement: Minimum = ยผ of slab thickness
Example:
Slab thickness = 150 mm โ required sawcut = 38 mm
Actual cut = 40 mm โ โ OK
Cut = 25 mm โ โ too shallow โ may cause random cracks.
