A pile of 0.5m diameter of length 10m is embedded in deposit of clay. The in- drained strength parameters of clay are cohesion =60KN/m2 and angle of internal friction =0. The skin friction capacity (kN) of pile for an adhesion factor of 0.6, is _?

👉What are the difference between cohesive and cohesion less soil?

➡️Cohesion as the word itself denotes, is the attraction between particles of same type/origin/nature Hence cohesive soil is a type of soil where there is inter particular attraction.

▶️This adds to the shear strength of the soil.
▶️The main feature of such soil types are that their particles are very fine and they are governed by the surface forces rather than by their self weight.

⏺Clay is a very good example for a cohesive soil.
*In pure cohesive soils, the friction between particles will not occur and hence their shear strength will be contributed by only cohesive force and not by internal friction.
*The angle of internal friction will not come into play here.

➡️None cohesive soil as the name indicates do not have cohesive forces.
*They are comparatively coarser particles with self weight governing their behaviour. The particles have internal friction and their shear strength depends upon the angle of internal friction between particles.

⏺Sand is a typical example.
*Exclusively non-cohesive soils will have zero cohesion.
.
▶️Now you must know that majority of the natural soil deposits do not come under the above categories.

🚧They are mostly C φ soils.
*That means they have both cohesive forces and frictional forces contributing to their shear strength.
📌These are the difference between cohesive and cohesionless soil.

👉What are the types of soils that a Construction engineer should know?

📌Types of soil a civil engineer should know

➡️Sandy Soils

⏺Sandy soils are free draining, with the largest, but fine and hard particles.
*It has a gritty feel
*It does not bind very well
*It is poor in holding water and easily warms up in the spring season.
*Sandy soils are very low in nutrients, as they are usually washed away.
*Its degree of aeration depends on the sizes of the particles, which vary a lot in size.

➡️Silty Soils

⏺This kind is finer, smoother in texture and holds water better than sandy soils.
*It also holds up nutrients and makes it better for crop cultivation.
*Silty soils are heavier than sandy soils, and almost midway between the properties of sandy and clay soils.
*It is formed when fine sediments (dust, organic matter, and debris) are carried by water or ice and deposited.
*When silt is deposited and cemented with time, it forms siltstone.
*Silt particles are so small and not easily seen by the eyes.
*It leaves a bit of residue after you touch them.

➡️Clay

⏺The particles that makeup clay are the finest and they bind very well.
*It has very little air spaces.
*Clay very sticky when wet, and can be molded into any shape and form.
*When they dry, they are rock hard.
*Clay soils do not drain very well.
*Clay is believed to form in places where the rock is in contact with water, air or steam.
**Example, sediments on sea or lake bottoms may become clay soils with time.

➡️Loamy

⏺This soil is a mixture of sand, clay and silt particles and has the ability to retain water.
*It is high in calcium, aeration, and ideal for most crops and vegetables.
*It is the soil all farmers dream of, as it is full of nutrients from decomposed organic material.
*It is soft and easy to cultivate.

➡️Peaty

⏺Peaty soils are acidic and as a result, does not support decomposition very well.
*It is dark in color, rich in organic material, although contains fewer nutrients than loamy soils.
*It retains water very well.

➡️Chalky

⏺Chalky soils are alkaline with a pH of about 7.5.
*It is not acidic and often stony with chalk or limestone bedrock.
*It is free draining because of its course and stony nature.
*Not the best for crops to grow in as they lack manganese and iron.

Given 1870g (gram) of wet compacted soil into mold with volume of 1000cm³. The soil is put into oven and dried to a constant weight of 1667 gram. The specific gravity of the soil is assumed to be 2.56.

Calculate

A. Water content (Ww)

B. Dry unit weight (γdry)

C. Porosity of the soil (n)

D. Degree of saturation (S)

E. Saturated unit weight of the soil (γsaturated)
