A grant of £49,616 from the British Academy has given the green-light to a collaborative research project with both the University of Erlangen/Nuremberg and the University of Amsterdam. The project will bring a new perspective on Muslim marriages by placing the experiences and voices of women at the center of research.
Dr Yafa Shanneik will lead the project ‘Reconsidering Muslim Marriage Practices in Europe: The Case of Iraqi and Syrian War-Widows’. It will focus on Iraqi and Syrian war-widows who have settled in the UK and Germany since the toppling of Saddam Hussein in 2003 and the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. The project Modernity and Islam was launched in 1995 with the support of the Körber-Foundation in Hamburg. From 1996 on, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Land Berlin have financed the scholarly program.
The Working Group was initiated under the impression that in Germany, indeed in Europe as a whole, the level of scientific and intellectual interest in Islam neither reflects its growing political importance nor its role as a reference for modern and post-modern criticism.

در این برنامه تحقیقاتی در مورد نقش مهم قرآن بر روابط و تعاملات با اسلام و بر گفت‌و‌گوهای بین گروه‌های مختلف مسیحیان با یکدیگر بحث و گفت‌و‌گو می‌شود و از این جهت نام آن "قرآن اروپایی" گذاشته شده تا نقش مهم کتاب مقدس مسلمانان در شکل‌گیری مباحث مختلف تاریخی در این دوره خاص مورد بررسی قرار گیرد...

EuQu will rewrite the history of the European Qur’an (c.1150-1850), placing European perceptions of the Qur’an and of Islam into the fractured religious, political, and intellectual landscape of the period. We will argue that the Qur’an plays a key role not only in polemical interaction with Islam but also in debates and polemics between Christians of different persuasions. We speak of the “European Qur’an” to emphasize the significant role of the Muslim holy book in different intellectual and cultural debates over this period in different parts of Europe...
