💣 A cluster bomb is a weapon that breaks apart in the air and releases multiple explosive submunitions called “bomblets” across a wide area. They can be dropped from aircraft, fired from artillery batteries or launched as warheads of various missiles, including the ATACMS. The fuze of the main container can be programmed in order to choose the dimensions of the area in which the bomblets are dispersed and that of each submunition can be programmed to explode at a certain height.

🏚 One of the main controversies about this kind of munition Is that they always leave some percentage of duds behind. Those are submunitions that fail to explode, creating dangerous zones for both civilian and military personnel to walk into. The use of cluster bombs in populated areas (civilians) is a violation of international humanitarian law because they cause indiscriminate destruction. 60% of cluster bomb casualties are people injured while undertaking everyday activities, according to Reuters.

✖️One third of all recorded cluster munitions casualties are children. According to Cluster Munition Coalition since the 2008, 99% of global stockpiles have been destroyed and more than 120 countries have signed the CCM witch prohibits the production, transfer, the use and the stockpiles of this types of weapon.
