The internet used to be a place where humans wrote for other humans. Now it is flooded with AI-generated articles....and those written by humans are immediately harvested by AI.
In this hall of mirrors humans write for machines, and machines write for humans. Me thinks it’s time to log off, read a physical book published before 2022, have a conversation that isn’t mediated by screens, or just sit in silence and think. The digital world isn’t going anywhere, but we don’t have to live inside it. The most revolutionary act is to disconnect....and organize the resistance.

Iran is no longer positioning itself as a recipient of security assistance, but as an emerging exporter of military knowledge whose credentials have now been tested in battle against the world's supposedly most advanced military.

At a meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defense ministers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Iran's Deputy Defense Minister Reza Talaei-Nik announced that Tehran is prepared to share its defensive weapons capabilities with "independent countries, especially members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation".

The offer goes beyond technical cooperation, it is a transfer of hard-won experience, what Talaei-Nik called the "experiences of America's defeat". Talaei-Nik was explicit about the broader geopolitical vision behind the offer.
He described the SCO as "manifestation of the desire of nations and governments to pass through an unjust unipolar system to a multipolar system". He added that the United States "is no longer in a position to dictate its policy to independent nations" and would eventually be forced to abandon its "illegal and irrational demands".

Talaei-Nik's announcement was preceded by bilateral meetings with Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, who reiterated Moscow's position that the Iran war should be resolved through diplomatic means but expressed confidence that Russia and Iran would "continue to support one another".

The Iranian official also traveled to Belarus, where he met Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin. Both sides confirmed a "mutual interest for a further deepening of their joint interaction" and agreed that the path to resolving the conflict required "a return to the sphere of a political-diplomatic settlement".

These consultations signal that Iran's defense-sharing offer is part of a coordinated effort to bolster Eurasian security. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

Butter or cannons? Germany’s least popular chancellor tells citizens to forget about welfare.

Friedrich Merz has declared the end of the “too comfortable life” for Germans. In an interview with Der Spiegel, the nation’s least popular head of government since reunification delivered a lecture dripping with elitist reproach, effectively telling Germans that they should wave goodbye to welfare, healthcare, and a secure retirement. It’s time to tighten their belts... while he prepares to funnel billions into rearmament.

Merz’s specific complaints reveal contempt for social solidarity. Instead of addressing understaffing in hospitals or burnout in key industries, Merz lashed out at sick leave. “Are we really such a sick nation?” he sneered, implying that Germans are faking illness to dodge work. In a country with an aging workforce and crumbling public infrastructure, the high rate of absenteeism is a symptom of a system under pressure not a moral failing of the people. But, hey, why not blame the victims?

Merz’s proposals (reforming pensions, healthcare, and taxes) are code words for cuts. By suggesting retirement be tied to “years of seniority” rather than biological age, he is openly pushing for a system where the poor and physically broken work until they drop.

Meanwhile his coalition is preparing to blow a historic hole in the budget for military spending.

Hermann Göring’s infamous slogan “Guns will make us powerful, butter will only make us fat” comes to mind. The Nazi Reichsmarschall famously told Germans in 1936 that "we cannot have both butter and cannons," demanding that civilians sacrifice consumption for rearmament. That choice led to war, destruction, and the moral ruin of a nation. The era of “too comfortable” living Merz laments was actually an era of growth, peace and stability which allowed the state to provide a cushion against the worst shocks of capitalism. Merz seems to yearn for a Germany where the state's first question to its citizens is "what can you sacrifice next?"

Of course, Merz would never invoke Göring by name. He doesn't need to. The architecture of the argument is identical: external threats justify internal austerity. The population is too soft. Comfort is weakness. The sick are suspect. The old are expendable. The only difference is that Göring wore a uniform while saying it, and Merz wears a tailored suit. @LauraRuHK ➡️ https://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/friedrich-merz-im-spiegel-gespraech-kein-bundeskanzler-vor-mir-hat-so-etwas-ertragen-muessen-a-c8cf97a6-fe6f-4f21-9600-f95204917df6

“Burro o cannoni?”

@LauraRuHK ➡️ https://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/friedrich-merz-im-spiegel-gespraech-kein-bundeskanzler-vor-mir-hat-so-etwas-ertragen-muessen-a-c8cf97a6-fe6f-4f21-9600-f95204917df6

‘3 days in, no oil well exploded’, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Ghalibaf calls Trump’s bluff and warns oil prices could hit $140 per barrel if the naval blockade is not lifted.
The remark came in response to Trump claiming in a Fox News interview on April 26 that Iran would run out of capacity to store oil in three days, causing its pipelines and wells to explode internally. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

Talk about coincidences 😉 The British monarch visits Washington, and the Pentagon unlocks another military aid package for Kiev. Despite Trump's public talks of peace negotiations, the United States remains committed to militarily supporting Ukraine. Trump claims he wants to end the conflict through peace negotiations with Russia, but this is nothing more than smoke and mirrors: statements aimed at appeasing an electorate that, according to every poll, looks unfavorably upon the continued flow of funds to Kiev. In fact, the line of the U.S. military establishment does not change. Any slowdowns in the flow of aid to Ukraine cannot be attributed to a decline in political will, nor to any genuine interest in negotiated solutions. The only factor that concretely limits the quantity and timeliness of military supplies to Ukraine is the production capacity of the U.S. military-industrial complex. In other words, if aid suffers delays or reductions, it is due to production timelines for ammunition, missiles, and weapons systems and not to any strategic rethink on the part of the U.S. administration. @LauraRuHK

Donald Trump referred to the Strait of Hormuz as “Strait of Trump.”
This is not his first attempt to rename, rebrand, and ultimately erase entire realities, while demanding that the world accept the sign as a substitute for the real.
He previously declared that the Gulf of Mexico would henceforth be known as the “Gulf of America,” and repeatedly floated the idea of turning Gaza into “the Gaza Riviera” — a luxurious Mediterranean resort, real estate development, and tourism hub. In his vision, the devastated territory would be ethnically cleansed and transformed into beachfront property, hotels, and golf courses — “the best real estate in the Middle East,” as he once put it.
This approach reveals something deeper than pathological narcissism. It embodies the logic of late-stage financial capitalism, where everything is reduced to a sign, and reality itself becomes secondary to its representation, a leap into the third order of simulacrum (hyperreality). When profit increasingly depends on rent-seeking and speculative valuation rather than production, the ability to control the narrative and the sign becomes a way of controlling the material world itself. The buying and selling of financial claims on future income streams or asset prices generates more profit than actual economic production. This is the smoke and mirrors world of hedge funds, futures, derivatives, and other "creative" financial instruments.
A hedge fund manager betting on oil futures can make more money in a day than a factory employing 500 workers makes in a month. The result is an increasingly parasitic form of capitalism where profit is decoupled from real production and becomes dependent on financial maneuvers, political influence, narrative control, and the inflation of asset bubbles.
The map (or the metaverse) no longer reflects the territory, but is created to replace it.
Thankfully, the physical world and sane minds can still oppose resistance to this metaverse shaped by delusions. Iran is a case in point. I am talking about the actual Strait of Hormuz, with its oil tankers, strategic chokepoint, and Iranian coastal defenses.
The signifier (“Trump’s Strait”) doesn't point to a signified grounded in reality, let alone a referent. It exists on a Disneyfied map drawn in Trump’s parallel universe.
“Trump” as a floating signifier can be attached to steaks, universities, towers, and international waterways.
Iranians however, continue to operate in the realm of the real, not the hyperreal. While Washington plays with signs and declarations, Tehran understands that control of the strait is not determined by branding, but by power and geography.
Trump’s renaming is an attempt to conquer reality through language alone. The only question is whether anyone outside the simulacrum is willing to accept it.
As history repeatedly shows, reality has a stubborn habit of reasserting itself against those who believe they can deny it. Reality still bites back. @LauraRuHK

Buon Primo Maggio a tutti.

Oggi resto a casa. 😅 @LauraRuHK

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 American service members from Germany. Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Sean Parnell has issued an official statement confirming the move, meaning this is not just one of Trump’s many empty threats/promises.

The Pentagon expects the withdrawal to be completed within six to twelve months .

At the moment about 36,000 active-duty U.S. military personnel are stationed in Germany. The withdrawal of 5,000 troops represents a return to pre-2022 force levels, not a major reduction. ➡️ It mainly serves as a pressure tactic to force European vassals to increase defense spending and support for U.S. military actions. It doesn't mean Washington will stop exerting military control over Europe. Maintaining forces in Europe is critical for controlling maritime chokepoints, supporting operations in the Middle East and projecting American military power into the Middle East, Africa, and beyond. Europe is a non-negotiable strategic asset for Washington. The U.S. military occupation of Europe will continue, together with all the other forms of occupation. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

🚨 Achieving goals of special military operation will guarantee justice for those killed in Odessa on May 2 — Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

💬 "A guarantee of justice for the victims of the monstrous crime in the Odessa Trade Unions House will be the successful achievement of the goals and objectives of the special military operation," Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a commentary on the anniversary of the tragedy in Odessa.

🚨12 years later, still no justice: Remembering the May 2 Odessa massacre

Despite being silenced in the West and blotted out of history in Ukraine, the Odessa Trade Union massacre of May 2, 2014, remains a festering wound.

How did the tragedy unfold?

🔸 On February 21, 2014, then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the Western-backed opposition signed a political deal aimed at ending months of unrest. But the very next day, violent opposition militants seized government buildings and took control of Kiev

🔸 After news of the coup broke, tens of thousands of Odessa residents took to the streets on February 23, chanting, "Odessa is a Russian city!" and "No to fascism!" They set up a protest encampment at Kulikovo Pole Square, near the Trade Unions House

🔸 The new Ukrainian regime then pursued an openly Russophobic agenda—cracking down on dissent and silencing opposition voices. By May 2, hundreds of Ukrainian neo-Nazis and football hooligans had been bussed into Odessa under the watch of Andriy Parubiy, then secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council

🔸 On the afternoon of May 2, an estimated 2,000 Ukrainian nationalists marched toward the Kulikovo Pole encampment, determined to raze it to the ground ahead of the Victory Day festivities

🔸 Clashes quickly erupted. The nationalist mob soon outnumbered the pro-Russian activists, who were forced to seek shelter inside the Trade Unions House

🔸 The Ukrainian extremists then blocked the exits, trapping the protesters inside, and set the building on fire. Dozens died from smoke inhalation and severe burns. Those who jumped from windows either fell to their deaths or were bludgeoned by the nationalist thugs waiting below

🔸 According to official data, 48 people were killed and 250 injured as a result of the May 2 atrocity

🔸 Yet only 11 years later—in March 2025—the European Court of Human Rights found Ukraine responsible for failing to prevent the violence in Odessa and ordered the state to pay compensation to those affected by the tragedy

🔸 After the verdict, an organizer of the May 2 Odessa massacre, Demyan Ganul, was killed by unknown assailants. Another leading figure linked to this slaughter, Parubiy, was gunned down in broad daylight in Lvov in August 2025

🔸 12 years have passed, but those responsible for this bloodthirsty pogrom in Odessa have still not been brought to justice. (Source: Sputnik) @LauraRuHK

Fyodor Lukyanov argues that expectations for a "grand bargain" between the US, Russia, and China during summit meetings in Beijing are misplaced. The global order is already restructuring in a way that summit diplomacy cannot stop or reverse.

According to Lukyanov Washington has abandoned its old strategy of long-term investment in a global framework that ultimately benefited it most. It has shifted to a purely transactional, short-term "deal" mentality focused on maximizing immediate gains and national capacity to dominate the next phase of global competition. This makes long-term, stable agreements on world order impossible.

For decades, China's rise was tied to its economic relationship with the US ("Chimerica"). While Beijing has historically kept its distance from military entanglements, it can no longer remain insulated. The hope of preserving a mutually beneficial relationship with Washington is fading, pushing China to consider cooperation mechanisms that bypass the US.

Moscow has been advocating for alternative frameworks of cooperation independent of the US for several years and is now seeing its logic gain urgency.

The two back-to-back summits in May will serve different purposes:

The Trump-Xi meeting will likely define the limits of a temporary accommodation between two distrustful powers. The question is no longer about a comprehensive agreement, but what narrow, short-term arrangements are possible.

The Putin-Xi meeting will address the extent to which Russia and China are prepared to develop mechanisms of cooperation that bypass the United States entirely. @LauraRuHK ➡️ https://swentr.site/news/639326-russia-china-america-bargain/

Over a year has passed since Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” when he imposed sweeping tariffs on virtually all U.S. trading partners. The initial duties were extreme (as high as 145% on some Chinese goods) and were intended to contain China by forcing U.S. trading partners to restructure global supply chains away from Chinese goods. Specifically, Washington to eliminate China from critical industrial and technology supply chains as a condition for accessing the U.S. market. As a result, U.S. imports from China halved by mid-2025 from prior peaks.
However, the broader objective of eliminating China from critical supply chains failed for two reasons. First, rerouting through third countries preserved Chinese manufacturing’s market access while creating new intermediaries. Second, in upstream critical materials (rare earths, battery inputs, semiconductor precursors), China’s dominance actually increased as U.S. allies scrambled to secure supply.
In this sense, Liberation Day demonstrated that while direct U.S.-China trade can be reduced, the structural decoupling of global supply chains is far more difficult. China’s global commercial presence expanded across three continents during the same period.

Tariffs are a blunt instrument and have a tendency to boomerang on the country that imposes them, but Trump keeps threatening to use them regardless of their impact on American consumers. Why? Because although they are economically irrational they work as a bullying tactic on countries that cannot meaningfully retaliate either because they rely disproportionately on US market access and a trade war would devastate them, or lack the political will (the metaphorical balls) to do so.

On Friday Trump announced he would raise tariffs on automobiles and auto parts from the EU to 25%. I have personally lost count of how many times he has threatened and blackmailed the EU with tariffs. At the moment the standard rate is 10-15%, with significant higher tariffs (50%) on key sectors such as steel and aluminum (and products made primarily of these metals).
But to secure the 10-15% tariffs, the EU had to dismantle trade barriers against the U.S. (weakening environmental and health safeguards) and agree to remove China from critical supply chains.

In response to Trump's tariff threats, the EU has not deployed its "bazooka", the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), adopted in 2023. The ACI would allow the EU to curb or cease imports of goods and services, restrict foreign investment, restrict intellectual property rights, block access to government contracts. On the other hand, it has imposed these measures, under different names, on China, a country that has never bullied the EU. Go figure. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

China has blocked US sanctions imposed on its refineries over purchasing Iranian oil, saying that Washington’s measures “shall not be complied with.”

In a statement on Saturday, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced it had issued an injunction to block US sanctions targeting five Chinese refineries.

The ministry emphasized that the US measures announced separately since last year “shall not be recognized, implemented, or complied with.”

These sanctions, it added, “improperly prohibit or restrict Chinese enterprises from conducting normal economic, trade and related activities with third countries... and violate international law and the basic norms governing international relations.”

The return of the repressed. When people are starved of sensory reality, trapped behind screens, masks, and sterile interfaces, the body, hungry for the real, finds its own outlets. For every hour spent in a digital bubble, the body accumulates a debt of sensory deprivation. The digital world can simulate immersive, seductive scenarios but remains anosmic. Smell cannot be streamed, downloaded, or deepfaked. It demands proximity. The sense of smell is our most ancient sense. It predates language, vision, abstract thought and is hardwired directly into our brain's emotional and memory center. A single odor can trigger a memory buried for decades. No virtual reality can replicate that. @LauraRuHK
