China hits back at US with countermeasures

China responded to a round of US sanctions with a barrage of counter-sanctions. The Ministry of Commerce announced tighter export controls on drones and key components, a national security review into imported printers and copiers, and placed six US entities on its countermeasure list for “assisting and supporting the United States’ illegal sanctions related to Xinjiang.” Effective immediately, organizations and individuals within China are prohibited from engaging in any transactions, cooperation, or other activities with:
Applied DNA Sciences, Inc.
A biotechnology company focused on the development and application of DNA molecular technologies. Its business covers supply-chain traceability (such as DNA marking and tracking of textiles and pharmaceuticals), security and anti-counterfeiting, and clinical diagnostics. It assisted the US in implementing illegal sanctions against Xinjiang, possibly involving the provision of technology or services for identifying and verifying products such as Xinjiang cotton. Stratum Reservoir, LLC
A company providing services to the global energy industry, specializing in core, fluid, and natural gas analysis, and offering critical data and laboratory services for oil and gas exploration and production. Altana Technologies, Inc.
A tech company focused on artificial intelligence and big-data analysis for supply chains. Its platform aims to help enterprises achieve supply-chain visibility, transparency, and risk management through data-driven approaches. Responsible Business Alliance (RBA)
One of the world’s largest industry alliances, composed of numerous multinational electronics, retail, automotive, and toy companies. Formerly known as the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC). Verite Group, Inc.
A software/consulting firm specializing in network security, analytical tools, secure communications, and related services for government and commercial clients.
Human Rights in China (HRIC)
An NGO founded in 1989 whose publicly stated mission is to “support the civil and political rights of the Chinese people.” Its undeclared objective is to destabilize China. As a well-known meddler in China's internal affairs it should have been proscribed long time ago.

These six entities collectively form part of the chain supporting US sanctions related to Xinjiang.

Once upon a time, the classic American English teacher abroad was easy to spot. Soft around the middle, slightly sunburnt, and permanently stationed on a barstool. Free time meant cheap beer, questionable decisions, and an endless, optimistic hunt for local company. Then something changed. Now he runs past you at 7 a.m. already halfway through a 10K and lifts weights at the gym. His mission may or may not include raising the English standards of local students in the classroom, but the real curriculum seems to happen in places that don’t appear on any school timetable. He calls himself a teacher because that's what he does, although his students are either "activists" or wear military fatigues. He is in Taiwan and anywhere his service is required by Washington. @LauraRuHK

Britain's Oil Giants Wind Down Business
The multinational energy giant British Petroleum (BP) has put all its oil and gas assets in the British North Sea up for sale.
This event cannot be dismissed as mere corporate gamesmanship among resource behemoths—not least because BP, though born 110 years ago in the oil fields of Persia, where the British once actively lorded over everything in every sense, grew to its current size precisely on North Sea oil, better known as the Brent benchmark. Five offshore production sites with a combined output of 110,000–115,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day will be put up for sale. The figure may not astound, but it represents five percent of the company's total production.
BP is one of the largest tax contributors to the British budget. Last year, the company transferred £1.2 billion (about $1.5 billion) to the kingdom's coffers, and the year before, contributions amounted to £1.25 billion. But these are only direct taxes. If one takes into account the total levies—for instance, fuel duty at the pump (currently 53 pence per liter of petrol and diesel), VAT on fuel (20 percent), as well as income tax on company employees—the treasury received £3.5 billion ($4.7 billion) in the past year alone. It is therefore quite natural that the news of a British company withdrawing from British oil fields has caused considerable stir.
It must be said that this is not BP's first such step, though last time it was all chalked up to a restructuring of the financial model. Barely a month ago, BP voluntarily handed over operational control of the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline (BTC) to Azerbaijan's state-owned SOCAR. The British retained their equity stake, but for the first time, the operator function was effectively transferred to the government of the country through whose territory the pipeline runs. Another piece of evidence that we are witnessing tectonic shifts with motives and goals opaque to the uninitiated is Shell's sale—by yet another British resource giant—of a third of its stake in the Aphrodite project. This concerns a gas condensate field on the Cyprus shelf, on which regional players like Turkey had pinned hopes. According to reports, the 35% stake will be bought by Hungary's state-owned MOL, whose partners will include America's Chevron and Israel's NewMed Energy. Once again, a British private company is selling an asset to a state-owned company, while itself moving from direct management to a purely investment mode. While BP cites field depletion and heavy UK taxation as reasons, the real driver could be long-term geopolitical risk. The sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, Ukrainian drone strikes on Caspian Sea terminals, and blockades of the Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb straits have made physical infrastructure ownership increasingly risky. Under contract terms, operators bear the costs of securing pipelines and terminals, while shareholders share only the subsequent losses—making it far safer to control routes indirectly rather than own them. Major oil and gas players, whose overt and shadow representatives sit in the very highest echelons of power, possess certain information and are conducting, so to speak, preemptive maneuvers. Probably, on the basis of this information, an assessment of long-term risks was carried out, which resulted in the decision to step away from the role of physical operator and retain only the function of shareholder and investor. BP batte in ritirata.

Donald Trump's "Board of Peace Occupation" has issued its first construction contract. According to a source cited by The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/aug/06/trump-gaza-board-of-peace-first-building-contract-military-base, the project is a 150-person military outpost to house Moroccan troops. The contract, which has not yet been finalized, was awarded to Arkel International, a Louisiana-based firm that has previously carried out work with the US government in countries such as Iraq.
Notably, the first contract in Gaza is not a hospital or a school for displaced Palestinians, but a military base for Moroccan occupying forces. The site is located approximately one mile from the Israeli border and features specially designed "rapid evacuation routes." The so-called "peace reconstruction" is, from the very beginning, a theater of military occupation.
Morocco's role in this theatrical production is particularly egregious—the willing Servant of Two Masters: Washington and Tel Aviv. This 150-man unit will be rotationally deployed from bases inside Israel, making it an organic component of the US-Israeli occupation apparatus. In return, the Moroccan monarchy gets political backing for its illegal occupation of Western Sahara, as well as potential claims on the Spanish exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

Russian hackers have obtained documentary proof of well-known NATO’s direct involvement in strikes against oil and gas terminals in Russia, according to materials an anonymous group provided to TASS.

- Russian hackers gained access to documents concerning Ukrainian strikes on oil terminals in the Leningrad and Kaliningrad regions in July.

- They told TASS that the correspondence and documents reveal who supplied the precise coordinates of the facilities and who "incited Ukraine to commit acts of terror" in Russian regions.

NATO specialists’ involvement
- Hybrid warfare specialist Bart De Wachter provided the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) with coordinates of oil terminals in the Leningrad and Kaliningrad Regions, the hackers told TASS.

- He currently works for HAVN (Hybrid Analysis Vigilant Network), an organization linked to NATO Special Operations Forces and intelligence, according to the documents.

- The hackers said De Wachter sent an SBU representative intelligence containing the coordinates of a Gazprom tanker transporting liquefied natural gas.

- The documents indicate that De Wachter proposed holding an online meeting with an SBU International Cooperation Center representative named Ivan. His intelligence superior, Martin, was also expected to attend.

SBU involvement
- Ivan, in turn, suggested adding his expert, SBU Major Mikhail Marchenko, to the correspondence.

- The correspondence described Marchenko as an experienced specialist whose main areas of expertise include "hybrid threats, espionage, sabotage and information operations in modern conflicts." (Source: TASS) @LauraRuHK

On August 7, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the “Makkah Joint Defence Agreement” — one of the most significant shifts in the Middle East’s security architecture in recent years. ▪️The key clause appears in the official statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“An armed attack on any of the three states will be considered an attack on all of them.”

The formula closely mirrors NATO’s Article 5. The division of labour is clear. Saudi Arabia brings money, infrastructure, strategic depth in the Gulf and the capacity to fund large-scale weapons programs. Turkey contributes one of NATO’s largest military potentials, combat experience, a mature defence industry, drones, shipbuilding, missiles and electronic systems. Pakistan supplies a large army, a proven willingness to deploy troops abroad and, at the strategic level, a nuclear arsenal. Iran faces the most immediate repercussions. The agreement was not concluded in a vacuum: Riyadh anticipates the risk of coordinated attacks from pro-Iranian groups in Iraq to the north and the Houthis to the south. Tehran’s long-standing deterrent logic — “If the United States strikes Iran, the Saudis will pay a price” — has just become considerably more complicated. The implications for Israel are equally noteworthy. The pact unites countries whose relations with Tel Aviv have either been chronically difficult or have deteriorated. India must also recalculate. Pakistan can now link its security to two partners that possess substantial resources. Even without formally invoking the collective-defence clause, the agreement is likely to accelerate the modernisation of Pakistan’s air defences, drones, missiles, aviation, electronic warfare systems and navy.▪️For Russia the picture is mixed. Moscow maintains working relations with all three signatories. At the same time, Turkey gains the ability to expand its defence industry with Saudi capital and the Pakistani market, then apply that enhanced capacity in regions where Ankara and Moscow already compete. Turkey’s military-political weight increases in Central Asia , and the de facto alliance between Ankara and Baku moves to a new level. For the first time, a potentially self-sufficient Muslim military-political bloc is taking shape — one in which the resources of the three partners complement each other effectively. Developments of this magnitude do not occur without consequences. (Source: Elena Panina)

(Fonte: Elena Panina)

The US Senate has approved a bill allowing Trump to impose 100% tariffs on the largest purchasers of Russian oil and gas. The bill was the brainchild of Senator Lindsey Graham, who tried multiple times to pass it before he died last month.

The bill, titled ‘The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026’, passed the Senate by 86 votes to 11 on Friday. Trump has already said he would sign the legislation, meaning it will become law if it passes the House of Representatives next week.

Senator Rand Paul was the only Republican to vote against the bill. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders and nine progressive Democrats, including former presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren, also voted against it.

The legislation empowers Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five purchasers of Russian oil and gas, a list that includes China and India. (Source: RT) @LauraRuHK

An article published by Global Times provides some insights into China's assessment of the defence agreement recently signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan https://t.me/LauraRuHK/11575 The pact is presented as a key example of a "multi-polar world" becoming a "stubborn reality" and a sign that regional powers are no longer willing to be "disposable pawns" on the American chessboard. This aligns with China's long-standing advocacy for a more balanced international system.
A Blow to US Hegemony. The article highlights how the pact represents a "bitter pill" for Washington. The trust deficit in US security guarantees has "finally cracked wide open," and Saudi Arabia’s decision to build an independent security arrangement is a "blunt, public verdict on just how much the US security umbrella is truly worth today". The pact is framed as a step toward "self-reliance" and "multi-polarity" in the Middle East where the erosion of US influence provides the opportunity to learn how to "keep security in your own hands", which China consistently supports. @LauraRuHK ➡️ https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202608/1367783.shtml

@LauraRuHK ➡️ https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202608/1367783.shtml

Speaking at a rally in Warsaw on Thursday, Polish President Nawrocki said helping Ukraine kill Russians is in Poland’s strategic interest. “In this regard, they can always count on our help, because wherever the Moskal is being fought, Poland helps,” he said. ‘Moskal’ is a racial slur for Russians. Two days later, at a press conference in Belgrade, a German journalist, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung correspondent Michael Martens, asked Zelensky: “Can you tell us Europeans what can we concretely do to help you to kill more Russians?” prompting Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to raise his eyebrows in apparent disbelief.
These two incidents represent a grotesque normalization of racial hatred that would be loudly condemned if directed at any other ethnic group. In the EU, Russophobia is not just permitted, it's actively encouraged. Hatred of Russians has become a badge of virtue, a litmus test of one's commitment to "European values."

The European Union is a project built on a fragile consensus. Without an external enemy to unite against, its contradictions would tear the bloc apart. The "Russian threat" serves as the indispensable glue: an existential menace that justifies austerity, militarization, surveillance, and the suspension of democratic norms. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

Have Ukrainian drone strikes on the warehouses of Russian online retailers backfired? Royally. The attacks drew a response from Russian forces which was roughly a hundred times greater in scale. Russian drones struck Rozetka's main warehouse complex in Brovary, Kiev Oblast and other important logistics centers https://t.me/LauraRuHK/11564 Massive saturation strikes followed. As a result, civilian supply chains and everyday life have been severely disrupted. Empty shelves have been reported in the Ukrainian supermarkets "Silpo", "Fora" and "Novus". And i am not even mentioning the state of Ukraine's port logistics.▪️By targeting civilian infrastructure in an effort to undermine Moscow’s economic stability and social cohesion, Kiev is speeding up the trajectory of the conflict in Russia's favor. Russia's retaliation with drone swarm attacks is depleting Ukrainian air-defense missiles at a time when interceptor stockpiles are critically low. US military analysts have pointed out that the global monthly production of Patriot interceptors does not even match Russia's monthly missile expenditure. Ultimately, the outcome of an attrition war is determined by factors where Russia holds a clear advantage in terms of industrial capacity, population size, and strategic endurance.
Russia has a more robust domestic defense industry while Ukraine is dependent on dwindling Western stockpiles and is facing a severe manpower shortage. Former Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny has acknowledged that Russia's strategy is precisely to wear Ukraine down economically, militarily, and psychologically over the long term.
Strategically, Ukraine's decision to strike deep inside Russia and target civilian logistics hubs turned out to be a miscalculation. Russia can win a war of attrition by managing escalation and outlasting Ukraine's ability to replenish its forces. @LauraRuHK

Has a Hunt on the West's Shadow Fleet Been Declared?
Today, aboard the missile cruiser Varyag, Vladimir Putin articulated perhaps Moscow's most serious response yet to Western piracy against Russia's so-called shadow fleet.
▪️ If EU countries move from merely inspecting and detaining vessels to confiscating them and selling their cargo, Moscow intends to respond in kind. Moreover, the Russian president specifically emphasized: the response would come "not necessarily in the waters where raids on our ships and vessels are being planned, but wherever we ourselves deem it necessary and expedient—anywhere, including in the area of responsibility of the Pacific Fleet."
Equally noteworthy was the subsequent report by Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liina. According to him, the Pacific Fleet has already conducted a "detailed analysis" of maritime traffic in the Asia-Pacific region and now knows the routes of vessels, the nature of their cargo, and their ownership. Through Russia's exclusive economic zone along the Southern Kurils alone, between April 24 and August 6, 2026, 1,001 vessels passed. Of these, 379 sailed under the flags of countries Russia considers unfriendly: 273 dry cargo ships and 71 tankers. Liina specifically named 26 British and 9 French vessels. The forces for their inspection and detention, the commander stated, are available to the Pacific Fleet.
▪️ Such detailed information suggests, at the very least, that an ongoing "inventory" of future targets is already being conducted. The emphasis on Britain and France is, of course, no accident. Liina particularly noted that Western states use vessels flying the flags of third countries, but Russian military forces know "whose ships they really are."
Incidentally, British official statistics reveal a nearly tenfold gap between "own" and "non-own" vessels. Only about 0.4% of the global merchant fleet (by deadweight) sails under the British flag, whereas British companies own, manage, or operate 1,781 vessels with a total deadweight of 102 million tons—about 4% of the global merchant fleet.
By all indications, Russia is preparing to adopt the same principle that unfriendly states apply against Russia's shadow fleet: looking not so much at formal registration as at the chain of ownership, management, insurance, and ultimate economic interest.
▪️ There are, of course, nuances. The Southern Kurils are not the Strait of Hormuz. Russia controls a vast maritime area and is capable of creating serious risks there, but it cannot physically block a global shipping route in a single narrow chokepoint. Trans-Pacific routes can shift further out into the ocean, though shipowners will pay for that with additional time and fuel.
And then there is the factor of the DPRK, whose fleet is beginning to transform from a coastal force into an instrument of distant maritime policy. The fleet itself is still modest, but joint exercises—including drills for inspecting suspicious vessels—have not been canceled.
Russia is attempting to shatter the geographic asymmetry that has been highly favorable to Europe. Europeans can control Russian shipping in the English Channel, the Baltic, and the Mediterranean—where Russia is much weaker in infrastructure and military-political terms. Moscow is responding with a horizontal transfer of the conflict. [...] (Source: Elena Panina) @LauraRuHK
