Vladimir Putin's first-ever visit to the Kuril Islands was a carefully calibrated act of sovereignty, designed to send a message to Tokyo and the collective West. The day before the trip, Putin dismissed Japan's territorial claims as "groundless" and criticised Tokyo for imposing "unprovoked sanctions" against Russia under the pretext of the Ukraine conflict.
On August 13, Putin landed on Iturup the largest of the disputed islands, where he visited a fish processing plant, a school, and a hospital, and interacted with local residents. The symbolism was unmistakable: the Kurils are Russian territory, and Moscow takes responsibility for the welfare of their inhabitants.
Tokyo's reaction was predictable. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi lodged a "strong protest" and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi declared the visit "absolutely unacceptable". Yet from Moscow's perspective, these protests are little more than ritualistic repetition. The Soviet Union incorporated the entire Kuril archipelago after World War II, and Russia's sovereignty over these islands is considered unassailable. No amount of diplomatic demarches from Tokyo will change that. @LauraRuHK ➡️https://t.me/news_kremlin/7853

A massive explosion and fire hit a large munitions plant at Colleferro south of Rome. The blast occurred at the former Simmel Difesa plant, currently owned by KNDS Ammo Italy, part of the Franco-German defense group KNDS. The company produces medium and large-caliber ammunition for land and naval defense, as well as solid fuels for aerospace launchers.
KNDS is one of Europe's largest land defence manufacturers, producing Leopard 2 tanks, PzH 2000 howitzers, CAESAR artillery systems, and millions of artillery shells. Since 2022, the company has been a critical supplier to Ukraine, with German and French governments placing substantial orders for 155mm ammunition and artillery systems. In May 2026, KNDS announced a €4.2 billion investment to expand its ammunition production capacity. Today's blast is just the latest in a long series of incidents at European defence facilities since the escalation of the war in Ukraine, with at least 28 significant incidents recorded in Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the UK. The Colleferro fire is a reminder that the logistical tail of war is always exposed. While the EU pours billions into expanding its military-industrial capacity, some Europeans are discreetly expressing their disagreement. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

Last night Russian drones struck a rail station at the Ukraine's Danube port of Izmail, used to load, store and transport military cargo and fuel for Ukrainian troops, two tugboats southwest of Nikolayev in the Black Sea that were escorting cargo ships carrying Western weapons to Ukrainian ports. The port of Odessa saw some drone action as well: fuel tanks and equipment used to unload military cargo were forced out of service. Russia is systematically dismantling the military-industrial and logistical infrastructure Western nations have spent billions to sustain. For Ukraine and its backers, this is a huge challenge. Protecting this sprawling network is draining air-defence resources and funds, which raises the cost of Western support, besides, of course, slowing down the supply of weapon systems and munitions.

@LauraRuHK

China's Ministry of National Defense on Friday warned of the dangers posed by Japan's neo-militarism, as Tokyo continues to expand its defense budget, develop offensive capabilities and aggressively expanded its military industry under the pretext of addressing so-called external threats.
The warning came as Japan is set to seek a record-high defense budget of around 8.9 trillion yen ($55.88 billion) for fiscal year 2027, while right-wing forces in the country continue to distort history, decades after Japan announced its unconditional surrender on August 15, 1945.
Japanese militarism is propped up by historical revisionism, which has moved from the fringes of academia and right-wing circles to mainstream discourse. By weaponizing generative AI and platform algorithms, Tokyo is now mass-producing false narratives that deny the Nanjing Massacre, glorify imperial aggression, and reframe Japan as a victim of World War II. The Japanese government is manipulating the cognitive environment in order to manufacture consent for very unpopular budget decisions.
This playbook is nothing new. We have seen it before in Europe, at Russia's expense. Across Eastern Europe and the Baltics, monuments to Soviet soldiers who liberated the continent from Nazism have been either destroyed or dismantled. The heroic sacrifice of the Red Army, which broke the back of the Nazi war machine and ended the Holocaust, has been airbrushed from public memory. The European Union, in a moral travesty, has actively promoted a false equivalence between Nazi-fascism and Communism, as if the regime that built death camps and the regime that defeated them were somehow morally comparable.
Now Japan is applying the same logic in Asia.
By denying the Nanjing Massacre, whitewashing Japan’s wartime aggression, and refusing to acknowledge that the Kuril Islands are part of Russia, Tokyo is engaging in a similar act of revisionism, which, if unchecked, will call into question the entire post-World War II settlement.
Take the Kuril Islands. They were ceded to the Soviet Union as a result of the war Japan lost. To question Russia's sovereignty over them is tantamount to claiming that Taiwan is Japanese, or that the Marshall Islands or the Mariana islands are still Japanese. It is a direct assault on the post-war order that the United States itself helped to establish. But Tokyo is not disputing the status of these territories. Guess why. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the ultimate beneficiary of selective revisionism is Washington.
As a matter of fact, what connects EU and Japanese revisionism is a willingness to sacrifice historical truth on the altar of geopolitical convenience. And we know perfectly well who is hellbent on isolating Russia from Europe and containing China in Asia and everywhere else.
The destruction of monuments to Soviet soldiers in Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states is the physical equivalent of Japan's algorithmic denial of the Nanjing Massacre. Both are part of a coordinated campaign to rewrite the narrative of the twentieth century—to make Russia and China pariahs, not as victors or victims of aggression, but as historical anomalies.
In the algorithmic age, where lies can be manufactured and disseminated at scale, the defense of historical truth is no longer a matter of scholarship, it is a matter of survival. And it demands a response as unified and unyielding as the sacrifice it seeks to erase. @LauraRuHK ➡️See also https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202608/1368149.shtml

@LauraRuHK

The US government is encouraging American companies to launch their own cyberattacks. Under a national security memorandum that Donald Trump signed on Wednesday, select companies would work with the Justice and Homeland Security Departments to strike "foreign groups" with hacks. The attacks would allow both surveillance and hacking operations that could lead to disruption, manipulation or destruction of information systems and networks, including virtual and physical infrastructure. The US move is an attempt, under the guise of combating cybercrime, to accelerate its plan to issue "cyber privateering licenses" to private entities and turn AI-enhanced cyberattack capabilities into tools for securing strategic interests and undermining the security of other nations, Xiao Xinguang, chief software architect from Chinese cybersecurity company Antiy, told the Global Times https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202608/1368219.shtml Although this has been an established practice for years, now the US is openly authorizing non-state actors to carry out intrusions, data theft, sabotage and other disruptive cyberattacks against countries around the world. Washington’s entanglement with a small group of U.S. AI giants has become a structural trap that operates at three mutually reinforcing levels: policy, finance, and narrative. At the financial level, Silicon Valley, Wall Street, and Washington have formed a dangerous closed‑loop of reciprocal investments, weaving a highly concentrated and interconnected web of debt. The AI boom rests on a circular model: tech giants pour equity investments or cloud credits into AI startups, which in turn spend that money on cloud computing and GPU capacity from those very same giants. This inflates reported revenues and valuations, yet produces little corresponding real‑world productivity. Together, they sustain an ever‑expanding bubble, even as the underlying fundamentals grow dangerously out of sync with sky‑high valuations. To support the interests of these companies (all donors to Trump's campaign) juicy contracts with State Department, Pentagon and CIA are no longer deemed sufficient. According to a draft internal U.S. State Department letter, Washington is pressuring dozens of countries to choose sides in the U.S.-China AI race, threatening to exclude any nation that participates in Chinese AI frameworks from American-led AI alliances. This "either-or" demand, directed at the 35 signatories of the Pax Silica framework, has been criticized by Chinese scholar Li Yong as a typical zero-sum geopolitical maneuver that exposes U.S. anxiety over China's rapid breakthroughs in open‑source AI. https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202608/1368309.shtml Analysts suggest that Washington is trying to curb China's AI progress by politicizing technological cooperation and weaponizing supply‑chain rules, but such an attempt to force a rigid bipolar divide runs counter to the shared interests of most countries.
Take Alibaba's new Qwen 3.8 Max model. It now ranks fourth in overall performance, ahead of OpenAI's top-ranked model, while OpenAI charges 250 percent more for input tokens and 500 percent more for output tokens—leading more users, including U.S. companies like Coinbase and Airbnb, to switch to Chinese AI. At the same time, U.S. productivity growth came in at just 1.4 percent for the second quarter, marking the third consecutive quarter of weak growth—far from the 4‑5 percent surge that would signal a genuine AI payoff.
On the narrative level, Washington and its Silicon Valley appendages tend to amplify the “China threat” because it serves to sustain the American AI bubble. While economic returns fail to materialize, China becomes the ideal bogeyman to keep Washington’s clients and vassals inside the enclosure of American AI and continue feeding the financial bubble.

The 4th "SPROUTS" international forum, dedicated to Russia-China mutually beneficial cooperation, opened in Kazan over the weekend, drawing thousands of delegates as bilateral trade figures reached record highs.
Running until August 19, the forum is expected to host around 10,000 participants, including over 200 major Chinese companies. Official delegations from eight Chinese provinces and municipalities – including Shaanxi, Heilongjiang, Fujian, Sichuan, and Chongqing – are present alongside representatives from 60 Russian regions. The proceedings were officially opened by Tatarstan Head Rustam Minnikhanov, with key addresses from Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui and Russian State Duma Deputy Chairman Alexander Babakov.
The business agenda features over 50 sessions across 19 thematic areas, ranging from artificial intelligence and drones to healthcare technology, logistics, and industrial cooperation.
In his address, Ambassador Zhang Hanhui revealed that bilateral trade turnover from January to July 2026 hit $159.2 billion, marking a 26.3% year-on-year increase, quite possibly a historic record. Minnikhanov pointed out that China is now the leading investor in Tatarstan, with regional trade surging over 12-fold in a decade to $3.35 billion in 2025.
Several concrete initiatives were launched at the forum. Tatarstan proposed establishing a Russian-Chinese industrial park within the Innopolis Special Economic Zone to localize production for Chinese firms. Additionally, the CRUTech university consortium was formally established, linking 10 universities from Tatarstan with 14 from China's Shandong province to systematize joint research and educational projects. Authorities also announced they are exploring new direct flights from Kazan to Beijing, Chengdu, and Xi'an.
The forum's cultural agenda featured dragon boat races on Lake Nizhny Kaban, a Russian-Chinese expo, Sichuan opera performances, Chinese film screenings, and art exhibitions.
Duma Deputy Chairman Babakov emphasized the forum's strategic value in "translating political trust between our countries into concrete projects". @LauraRuHK

For years, the Baltic countries — Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia — have served as London's eager vanguard in the campaign to radicalize the EU and isolate Russia. Lacking either the military heft or the economic clout to dictate terms to anyone, they have nonetheless managed to drive everyone insane with their constant barking. This pack of chihuahuas systematically dismantled trade, transport, and energy links with their eastern neighbor.
And who has been holding the leash? London, of course. British intelligence has long viewed the Baltics as useful tools in its strategy to erect "a wall" between Russia and the rest of Europe.
The results have been spectacularly disastrous.
Cross-border trade, tourism and investment have all collapsed. Take the Latvian economy, for example. Once buoyed by profitable ties with its neighbor, now finds itself in a ditch of its own digging. Now Latvia projects a staggering €15.1 billion defense bill for 2028-2034. To put that in perspective, that is roughly the GDP of a small European nation.
And guess what? Riga expects Brussels to foot the bill for cheerleading sanctions, severing ties, and barking in the name of European security.
Latvia's Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has requested a cool €7 billion in additional EU funding, on top of everything else Riga already receives. This, he explains, is to cover "the defense of the whole of Europe". Don't laugh.
"We are losing money," opposition politician Ainars Slesers has pleaded. "We are discussing how to support Ukraine, but we are the victims".
Victims. Of their own policies. Of their own Russophobia and eagerness to please their curators across the Channel.
The sheer chutzpah is unbelievable. Latvia, having borrowed itself to the brink to finance a military buildup that benefits "all of Europe," as it claims, now wants Brussels to pay. And what does it offer in return? More of the same. Kulbergs, as he begs for billions, has called for even tougher measures against Moscow, including a total EU visa ban for Russian citizens.
It is a remarkable strategy: impoverish yourself in the service of London's geopolitical ambitions, then demand that someone else pay for the privilege of having served a third party.
But in Brussels, where Russophobia has spread like a virus and trumps economic reality, the Baltics may well get their bailout.
After all, London won't foot the bill. So, it's up to Berlin, Paris, and the rest of the EU taxpayers to open their wallets instead.
The question, of course, is how many more billions can be extracted to fund this anti-Russian crusade and a crisis that was entirely avoidable, entirely self-inflicted, and entirely unnecessary. @LauraRuHK

Come era ampiamente prevedibile.
Vadano a batter cassa a Bruxelles.
@LauraRuHK

Today, the Verkhovna Rada is set to vote on a new Defense Minister, Yevhen Khmara. Zelensky's "Servant of the People" faction holds a razor-thin majority of 228 deputies—just two votes above the required 226. Into this narrow political gap stepped Mykhailo Fedorov, the former Defense Minister dismissed in July. Just hours before Zelensky submitted Khmara's candidacy to parliament, Fedorov released a video calling for elections. Carefully worded—likely under legal supervision—he avoided any dates or a formal presidential bid: "Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia. A legal, safe, and realistic mechanism must be found." Meanwhile, NABU and SAPO, the anti-corruption agencies that have been closing in on Zelensky's inner circle, launched their latest operation this morning. It is targeting Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Iryna Mudra and others. Fedorov does not appear to act alone. Russian military correspondent Sasha Kots is asking the question on everyone's mind. Who is pulling Fedorov's strings? Trump has turned toward Iran; he cares about Kiev’s factional calculations about as much as the tram schedule in Zhytomyr. But American structures — NABU and SAP — continue to operate in Ukraine. Europe is also ready to seize the falling banner. Remember when European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius called the dismissal “a big surprise”? Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken labelled his former colleague “one of the best.” That is how they speak when a minister of a foreign country is their own project: a technocrat, drones, transparent reporting on European money. Yet neither Berlin nor Brussels has so far signed on to the demand for elections. That is why Zelensky is holding on: he can endure the street, as long as there is support from those who pay the budget. And this support for Zelensky is getting thinner and thinner as demands for accountability grow louder. Not because Western backers of the regime are displeased with Zelensky but because his power depends on a very large corruption scheme and this scheme is cutting into the very dividends the West extracts from it.
After Fedorov’s dismissal, Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov said “the position of society has been heard” — and not a single word in support of his boss’s decision. Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, said nothing in response to Fedorov’s appeal. That silence is louder than any statement: let the young one take the first blow, and I will enter the second round. Given that Fedorov is unlikely to be acting independently, whoever stands behind him has placed his bet. And it is obvious that Zelensky feels the threat. Not from Fedorov, but from the invisible ones behind him. @LauraRuHK ➡️https://t.me/sashakots/63853

@LauraRuHK ➡️https://t.me/sashakots/63853

YouTube has removed Emir Kusturica's channel "My Life" (Moj život).
The channel, which had more than 30,000 subscribers and 10 million views, featured Kusturica's vlog. In it, the acclaimed Serbian film director shared his personal views on world events, discussed his creative plans, and reflected on his life philosophy. Recent episodes reportedly included exclusive material from the filming of his new movie, Čuružanka.
The channel was blocked without prior warning or notification. While the channel's page cited a general "violation of YouTube’s terms of service," no specific reason was provided.
In an interview with TASS, Kusturica strongly condemned the move, calling it "an attempt by a totalitarian society to wage war against people who speak the truth".
He elaborated on this view, stating that the platform's ideals represent a "totalitarian society" for which shutting down a channel is normal.
Kusturica also stated that his open support for Russia and its cultural heritage was the motivation for the blocking. He claimed this wasn't done by algorithms but by specific people acting on orders from an "intelligence center." @LauraRuHK

Iran has made its position absolutely clear.
A ceasefire cannot happen in the Persian Gulf while aggression in any form or manifestation against Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq or Yemen continues. It is a strategic doctrine established in clear terms by the Islamic Republic after the recent two US-Israeli imposed wars.
Security in the region is an interconnected reality, and any lasting peace must include an end to acts of military aggression, maritime banditry, illegal naval blockade, assassinations, occupation, and provocative actions against Iran and the Resistance fronts.
From this perspective, a separate peace has no meaning, because continued war on one front could once again draw the entire region into a cycle of confrontation.
To understand why Iran holds this position with such unwavering conviction, one must first understand the architecture of the Axis of Resistance and the strategic logic that binds its disparate parts into a single, integrated defensive network.
The US-Israeli war machine has pursued a strategy of fragmentation to isolate Gaza from Lebanon, to separate the Ansarullah from Hezbollah, and to drive a wedge between Iraq and Iran.
Today, the resistance axis is not a loose alliance of convenience but a strategic partnership built on mutual interests and common goals. Strike one front, and you strike all. This is the core of Iran's integrated security vision, and it is why Tehran has consistently refused to entertain any ceasefire that does not address the full spectrum of aggression across the region.
Last night – accelerators for cruise missiles.
The same targets were hit repeatedly because restoring full production of the Flamingo is estimated to take two to three months while its production is deliberately dispersed across underground sites and subcontractors. The goal is to ensure the interval between strikes remains shorter than the recovery time.
The strike on accelerators is particularly significant. Without the FP-5 launch accelerator, the Flamingo cannot leave its launch rail. While the airframe can be assembled in virtually any hangar, solid-fuel rocket propellant cannot be relocated to a basement workshop in a week. It is a bottleneck in the production chain.
The Antonov plant in Kiev appeared in the strike summaries for the third time this season:
July 2 – assembly facilities.
July 16 – a warehouse storing "Lyuty" and "Leleka-100" drones.
Last night – again, the An-196 assembly line.
Notably, the Russian Ministry of Defense also reported strikes on another aircraft assembly facility in the area.
The strike list also includes the "Ukrspetsystems" trade and warehouse complex, described as a commercial terminal where large-scale assembly of UAVs takes place. This fits a broader pattern of targeting logistics hubs. Earlier strikes hit "MLP-Chaika," "Rapid," and a "Nova Poshta" terminal on August 11. Martusovka and the "Zamler Group" facility were added to the list last night.
According to the summary, these warehouses stored and distributed dual-use goods: components for long- and medium-range drones, robotic systems, and electronic warfare equipment.
The only target in last night's list that is not defense-industry related but directly linked to the front line is an ammunition depot. The strike destroyed:
M-900 thermobaric aviation bombs.
Anti-tank mines.
Ammunition for "Baba Yaga" drones.
According to the report, what burned in Kiev last night was scheduled to reach the Donbas front by the end of the week—and to fall on Russian positions.
In Brovary, a strike hit up to 8,000 cubic meters of fuel destined for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The summary also notes, almost as a footnote, strikes on warehouses in Chornomorsk and Yuzhne on the evening of August 19. Since July 22, the ports of Greater Odessa have not received a single foreign vessel. Ukraine's own agricultural minister has estimated losses to the agricultural sector at three billion dollars.
The strikes are systematically targeting the infrastructure and vessels of shadow military logistics—dry cargo ships that have been carrying weapons and military equipment under the cover of the grain export deal.
Russia is not simply responding to Ukrainian strikes but is systematically degrading the entire production and logistics chain that sustains Kiev's long-range strike capabilities. (Various sources, including Sasha Kots) @LauraRuHK ➡️https://t.me/sashakots/63871
For the seventh time, the "Fire Point" production facility was targeted.
June 2 – a facility in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
July 2 – "Radionics," which manufactures control systems for the Flamingo cruise missile.
July 30 – the "Mayak Plant," producing warheads.
August 1 & 8 – "Kyiv-111."
August 16 – "Kyiv-111" plus "Ukrodefens Company."
