Navi Pillay reacts to Nobel Peace Prize win

Navi Pillay, the eminent South African jurist who co-authored the United Nations report accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, has expressed disbelief and gratitude after officially receiving confirmation from the Norwegian Nobel Institute that she was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Speaking in a personal phone call, Pillay told Kristian Berg Harpviken, Secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, that she could barely credit the news until hearing it directly from him.

Pillay described the award as a massive recognition for the global human rights community and international legal institutions rather than just an individual honour.

Pillay, 85, is one of the most influential figures in international criminal justice and human rights law, and is South Africa’s most prominent international judge.

Houthis threaten further strikes on Saudi Arabia

Yemen's Houthis have threatened Saudi Arabia with further escalatory strikes if the kingdom does not accept its terms for peace, a member for the Political Bureau of Ansar Allah said on Monday.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia has also threatened retaliatory strikes after Houthi attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport killed 12 people and injured 300 on Saturday. They also targeted an Aramco building on Tuesday evening, resulting in a limited fire.

The group said that the attacks were in response to Saudi Arabia's support for government forces in Yemen's civil war, including an air strike on Sanaa airport earlier this year.

The escalations have fuelled an existing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, displacing over 200,000 people.

Israeli occupation devastates Gaza’s olive harvest

Israel’s continuing occupation of Gaza has devastated the territory’s olive industry, with farmers reporting widespread destruction of orchards, soaring prices and a harvest reduced to a fraction of pre-war levels.
Gaza’s agricultural authorities estimate that only 150,000 of the territory’s two million olive trees remain standing. This year’s harvest is expected to yield around 5,000 tonnes of olives, down from the usual 40,000 tonnes.
Farm workers are struggling from the lack of work, while nearly half of Gaza’s olive trees remain beyond the Israeli yellow line.
The destruction has also driven up prices, with a 16-litre can of olive oil now costing around 1,500 shekels ($488), compared with 500 shekels before the war, putting it beyond the reach of many Palestinians.

#BREAKING: The Turkish government submitted the text of the Mecca Defence Pact to the Turkish Parliament on Tuesday.

The pact, signed by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in August, establishes a new international defence alliance that commits the signatories to one another’s defence, similar to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

The text of the agreement, obtained exclusively by Middle East Eye, does not identify any specific country or region as a threat, but emphasises that all participating countries will take the necessary measures to support one another in the event of an armed attack against their independence, sovereignty or territorial integrity.

Why Britain's liberal Zionists must watch NAZA | The David Hearst Podcast

David Hearst, editor-in-chief of Middle East Eye, says that watching NAZA, a documentary by Israeli directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor featuring interviews with members of an elite Israeli army unit involved in supplying targets for what he describes as genocide, should be “compulsory” for Britain’s liberal Zionists.

Hearst criticises those who, he argues, continue to portray themselves as victims while dismissing pro-Palestinian demonstrations as “hate marches” and accusing critics of Israel and its leaders of antisemitism.

He says the documentary revealed nothing that Middle East Eye had not already reported over the past three years, but argues that British politicians Andy Burnham and Ed Miliband should watch it.

“Miliband’s stand against Israel lasted all of ten days,” Hearst writes.
