World’s largest rice exporter restricts shipments

India has banned sending broken rice abroad and imposed a 20% duty on other varieties.

The South Asian nation cited food security concerns in making the move, which was announced on Thursday, as below-average monsoon rainfall had curtailed planting. India exports rice to more than 150 countries.

IceAgeFarmer note: this is the “food nationalism”
that was described by Podesta’s Food Chain Reaction Game leading to massive geopolitical instability and hunger

Russian, Indian Banks Working on New Trade Mechanism

India’s UCO Bank and Yes Bank are in talks with several Russian lenders over a new payment mechanism.

The banks are trying to work out a currency pair for the payments, with the options being the Indian rupee paired with the Russian rouble or Saudi Arabia's riyal, a senior official told the Economic Times.

Earlier it was reported by Reuters that large Indian banks were avoiding direct transactions in rupees with Russia due to fear of being targeted by Western sanctions.

Indian government gives itself the power to “fact-check” and delete social media posts

Journalists, opposition parties, and advocacy groups are worried what this “absolute power” means for press freedom in
India

The Indian government on April 6 announced a state-run fact-checking unit that will have sweeping powers to label any piece of information related to the government as “fake, false or misleading” and have it removed from social media. The country has tweaked its tech rules that now require platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to take down content flagged by the fact-checking body. Internet service providers are also expected to block URLs to such content. Failure to comply could result in the platforms losing safe harbor protection that safeguards them from legal action against any content posted by their users, said India’s minister of information technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

“The amended rules now also make it obligatory on the intermediaries to not to publish, share or host fake, false or misleading information in respect of any business of the Central Government. [This] fake, false or misleading information will [be] identified by the notified Fact Check Unit of the Central Government,” the government said in a press release.

Android spyware camouflaged as VPN, chat apps on Google Play – June 2023

Three Android apps on Google Play were used by state-sponsored threat actors to collect intelligence from targeted devices, such as location data and contact lists.
The malicious Android apps were discovered by Cyfirma, who attributed the operation with medium confidence to the Indian hacking group "DoNot," also tracked as APT-C-35, which has targeted high-profile organizations in Southeast Asia since at least 2018.
In 2021, an Amnesty International report linked the threat group to an Indian cybersecurity firm and highlighted a spyware distribution campaign that also relied on a fake chat app.

Securonix Threat Labs Security Advisory: New MULTI#STORM Attack Campaign Involving Python-based Loader Masquerading as OneDrive Utilities Dropping Multiple RAT Payloads Using Security Analytics - Securonix – June 2023

An interesting phishing campaign was recently analyzed by the Securonix Threat Research Team. The attack kicks off when the user clicks on a heavily obfuscated JavaScript file contained in a password protected zip file. Some of the victims targeted by the MULTI#STORM campaign appear to be in the US and India.

The attack chain ends with the victim machine infected with multiple unique RAT (remote access trojan) malware instances, such as Warzone RAT and Quasar RAT. Both are used for command and control during different stages of the infection chain.

Small Indian farmers demand fixed prices amidst pro-corporation farming law vulnerability

Indian farmers are fighting for their livelihoods as they demand fixed prices for their crops in the face of pro-corporation farming laws that leave smallholders vulnerable. The agriculture sector is a vital part of India's economy, but these new laws have caused widespread protests and strikes across the country. Farmers fear that the laws will benefit large corporations at their expense, leaving them with no power to negotiate prices for their produce.

eXotic Visit campaign: Tracing the footprints of Virtual Invaders | We Live Security

ESET researchers have discovered an active espionage campaign targeting Android users with apps primarily posing as messaging services. While these apps offer functional services as bait, they are bundled with open-source XploitSPY malware. We have named this campaign eXotic Visit and have tracked its activities from November 2021 through to the end of 2023. The targeted campaign has been distributing malicious Android apps through dedicated websites and, for some time, through the Google Play store as well.
