I am currently testing the SimpleX messenger, in particular the group chat function. I noticed something while using it: Messages sometimes arrive with a considerable delay. For example, a message that was originally sent at 19:39 was not displayed in the chat until 11:50 the next day. The problem seems to be independent of the various notification settings - regardless of whether you select "Only active when app is open", "Periodically active" or "Always active", the behavior remains the same.
There are currently already over 100 participants in the group, and if such delays are already occurring, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop when more users join. After a certain amount of time, the delayed messages are added to the chat history correctly and in the correct chronological order, but the question remains as to how the performance of the messenger will behave if the group continues to grow.
Evgeny Poberezkin (founder of SimpleX) says:
We never designed groups to be usable for more than 50 users and we've been really surprised to see them growing to the current sizes despite limited usability and performance. We do not think it is technically possible to create a social network of a meaningful size in the SimpleX network.
For comparison: In the Signal group, there are just under 600 members. There too, performance is not always optimal due to end-to-end encryption, but the messages are at least displayed with a slight delay and in the correct chronological order.
The conclusion could therefore be that SimpleX is not suitable for group chats with more than 50 participants.

SimpleX: Gruppenchat-Funktion im Praxistest
Ich teste aktuell den Messenger SimpleX, insbesondere die Funktionalität in Gruppenchats. Während der Nutzung ist mir etwas aufgefallen: Nachrichten kommen…
People think #SimpleX #im Chat is secure. It's not. Truly decentralized services aren't able to moderate anything via a central authority, but SimpleX outright states they do exactly that via their centralized servers that they describe in "how it works" docs as a sort of "data pipe" that just relays data without examining it, yet they explicitly say they can and DO block files from being sent. ALL CENTRALIZED SERVICES ARE ABSOLUTELY CONTROLLED BY SOMEONE AND OPEN TO ANYONE WHO CAN BUST IN THE DOORS. There are no exceptions.
