🔴 Using #WhatsApp helps the israeli army pick targets in Gaza

In April 2024, +972 Magazine journalist Yuval Abraham revealed the existence of Lavender ⁠AI: a system that automatically picks bombing targets. Lavender collects information on most of the 2.3 million residents of Gaza through a system of mass surveillance, then assesses the likelihood that each particular person is active in Hamas or PIJ, giving almost every single person in Gaza a rating from 1 to 100.

The article said that the current commander of #Unit8200 wrote in a guide book for Lavender ⁠AI that the features being used to select targets include “being in a WhatsApp group with a known militant, changing cell phone every few months, and changing addresses frequently.”

“The sources told +972 and Local Call that, during the first weeks of the war, the army almost completely relied on Lavender.” Israel has deployed additional automated systems, e.g., ‘Where's ⁠Daddy’ signals when a target has entered his family home.

Last week, The Intercept wrote that many WhatsApp employees fear that Israel has been using a vulnerability based on traffic analysis. According to their assessment: “[Deep Packet] Inspection and analysis of network traffic is completely invisible to us, yet it reveals the connections between our users: who is in a group together, who is messaging who, and (hardest to hide) who is calling who”... [A typical threat is due to peer-to-peer calls between users, which can be disabled on Telegram since many years ago but on WhatsApp only since Nov ⁠8, 2023 ⁠!]

Anger grows within Labour over role of ex-Israeli military intelligence official | Middle East Eye


Senior UK Labour Party figures have reacted with anger and dismay to the organisation's decision to recruit an Israeli former military intelligence officer as one of its social media managers.

Assaf Kaplan, who served with the Israeli army's signals intelligence and surveillance agency known as Unit 8200, was recruited last year to work in the office of the party leader, Keir Starmer.

While Unit 8200 is the counterpart of civilian-run agencies in the West such as the National Security Agency in the US and the UK's GCHQ, it has faced fierce criticism for its role in maintaining close surveillance of the Palestinian civilian population.

🇵🇸 Israeli spy agencies develop ‘Chat GPT-like’ AI tool to target Palestinians: Report | The Cradle

Israel has compiled an extensive collection of intercepted Palestinian communications to develop an artificial intelligence tool similar to #ChatGPT, which it aims to use to enhance its #espionage capabilities, according to an investigation by the Guardian released on 6 March. 

The investigation uncovered that the IOF’s #Unit8200 programmed the #AI tool to understand colloquial #Arabic by using large amounts of Palestinian phone calls and text messages obtained through its surveillance. 

Unit 8200 “began building the model to create a sophisticated chatbot-like tool capable of answering questions about people it is monitoring and providing insights into the massive volumes of #surveillance #data it collects,” the investigation revealed.

Since 2022, #israel’s #Unit8200 has been using a #surveillance program, hosted on a customized #Microsoft #Azure #cloud partition, to record and store voice recordings of millions of #Palestinian phone calls each day from Gaza and the West Bank.

The system operates at an enormous scale, capturing up to a million calls per hour and storing about 11,500 terabytes, which equals around 200 million hours of audio by mid-2025. The data has been used to plan airstrikes, carry out detentions, and even engage in the extortion or blackmail of Palestinians.
