France plans to reduce livestock numbers to meet climate targets
In order to become climate neutral by 2050, livestock numbers are to be reduced in France. The government plans 25% fewer cattle and 30% fewer pigs to reduce CO2 emissions by 46%.
To achieve its own climate targets, the French government is apparently planning to cut back on livestock. The National Strategy for Decarbonization (SNBC) stipulates that France - like the European Union as a whole - should become climate-neutral by 2050.
In order to reduce agricultural emissions by 18% between 2015 and 2030, the Paris Ministry of Agriculture is now aiming to reduce dairy and suckler cow herds by 13% and 12%, respectively, and sow numbers by 14%. Over the 2050 time horizon, the cattle herd and sow herd are to be reduced by 25% and 30%, respectively, compared to 2015 levels, in order to reduce emissions by 46%.
The head of agricultural policy at Climate Action Network, Cyrielle Denhartigh, confirmed that the herd reductions projected in the decarbonization strategy have not yet been made public.
Meanwhile, Pierre-Marie Aubert of the Paris Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) says the technical assumptions in the strategy are "very optimistic." He fears, however, that the reduction in livestock may not be enough to meet France's climate commitments.

Vegans exempt from compulsory Covid vaccinations, legal experts warn

Vegans would be exempt from compulsory workplace Covid vaccinations and employers risk legal action if they insist workers are double-jabbed, "experts" say.
The Covid vaccine does not contain animal products, but all medications currently go through animal testing.
Ethical veganism was ruled to be a protected characteristic at a tribunal last year.
It means any employers would risk legal action if they order staff to be vaccinated.
A spokesman for Lewis Silkin, a law firm, told the Telegraph: “Some ethical vegans may disagree with vaccinations on the basis that they will inevitably have been tested on animals.
“Ethical veganism has previously been found to amount to a belief, capable of being protected.”
The protections mean that vegans and people in other categories, including some religious groups as well as those with certain disabilities or medical conditions, could mount a claim of constructive dismissal if forced to get the jab.
“The definition of veganism recognises that it is not always possible or practicable for vegans to avoid participating in animal use, which is particularly relevant to medical situations.
“In the case of Covid-19, vaccination will play a fundamental role in tackling the pandemic and saving lives. As there is currently a legal requirement that all vaccines are tested on animals, at this point in time it is impossible to have a vaccine that has been created without animal use.”

There is sometimes sheer existential fear among our farmers. The prices for animal feed have more than doubled in a very short time. GMO-free soy is hard to come by. As a result, many keepers are no longer able to re-stall,” Henner Schönecke, Chairman of the BVEi, describes the situation.
No more restocking means fewer laying hens are available to lay eggs. Schönecke expects that the security of supply with German eggs can no longer be guaranteed by August at the latest.
