The British army has requisitioned a large area of Cypriot land to build over 130 military antennas, which campaigners fear will be used to spy on the Middle East.

While the land - amounting to over 60 football pitches - is technically in the British occupied part of Cyprus. This land grab has led to a furious response from Cypriot residents, who held a protest outside the RAF #Akrotiri air base on Saturday.

Akrotiri is one of the most important areas for biodiversity in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. The Akrotiri Salt Lake is a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Special Conservation Area (SCA) within the Natura 2000 network, and at the same time, it is one of the most important migratory routes for birds in the Eastern Mediterranean.
