Google discloses vulnerability in Chrome OS 'built-in security key' feature

Security issue fixed in late June, with the release of Chrome OS 75. Additional remediation steps below.

Google is urging Chromebook users to update devices to fix a critical vulnerability in an experimental Chrome OS feature that handles two-factor authentication procedures.

The vulnerability impacts the Chrome OS feature known as the "built-in security key." The feature works by allowing users to use a Chromebook device similar to a hardware-based USB/NFC/Bluetooth security key.

Watching You Watch: The Tracking Ecosystem of Over-the-Top TV Streaming Devices

By 2020 one third of US households are estimated to “cut the cord”, i.e., discontinue their multichannel TV subscriptions and switch to internet-connected streaming services. Over-the-Top (“OTT”) streaming devices such as Roku and Amazon Fire TV, which currently sell between for $30 to $100, are cheap alternatives to smart TVs for cord-cutters. Instead of charging more for the hardware or the membership, Roku and Amazon Fire TV monetize their platforms through advertisements, which rely on tracking users’ viewing habits.

Two Widely Used Ad Blocker Extensions for Chrome Caught in Ad Fraud Scheme

Two widely used Adblocker Google Chrome extensions, posing as the original — AdBlock and uBlock Origin — extensions on Chrome Web Store, have been caught stuffing cookies in the web browser of millions of users to generate affiliate income from referral schemes fraudulently.

There's no doubt web extensions add a lot of useful features to web browsers, making your online experience great and aiding productivity, but at the same time, they also pose huge threats to both your privacy and security.

Malicious Android Apps Evade Google Play Protect via Remote Commands

More than two dozen malicious Android applications with over 2.1 million installs in total were observed by security researchers while displaying aggressive full-screen ads after downloading configuration files.

The 25 apps were found in the Play Store during late-August and, while immediately after being installed they did not exhibit any malicious behavior, the apps will subsequently download malware configuration files that would switch on their 'evil' mode.

Adware with millions of downloads found on the Google Play Store

Wandera’s threat research team has discovered two adware apps on the Google Play Store with a combined 1.5M+ downloads. The apps are both selfie filter camera apps with similar functionality.

Adware is usually viewed as a nuisance for the end-user. However, mobile adware can kill productivity leading to more serious repercussions for businesses. Intrusive out-of-app ads interrupt users in the middle their workflow, brick their devices, drain the device battery, and in some cases, infected devices need to be replaced altogether.

More Hidden App Malware Found on Google Play with over 2.1 Million Downloads

Malicious apps hide themselves after installation and aggressively display full-screen advertisements.

In recent times we’ve seen multiple malicious apps found in the Google Play Store by various cyber security firms, including Symantec, yet this problem doesn’t seem to be dissipating. We have uncovered another wave of malicious apps in the Play Store which have been downloaded more than 2.1 million times. We reported these apps to Google on September 2, 2019, and they were removed from the store.

‘Fleeceware’ Play store apps quietly charging up to $250

Imagine an Android GIF-making app available on Google Play that automatically charges €214.99 ($253) to continue using it beyond its three-day trial period.

Or how about a completely unremarkable QR code reader app, whose developer thinks that a charge of €104.99 is a fair price to continue using it 72 hours after it was downloaded.

172 malicious apps with 335M+ installs found on Google Play

Google desperately needs to curb the spread of Android malware. In September alone, researchers uncovered a total of 172 infected apps on the Play Store. The worst part? These apps had racked up over 335 million installs by the time they were detected by security experts.

Adware accounted for a staggering 300,600,000 installs, according to data complied by ESET malware researcher Lukas Stefanko. Other types of malware found on Play included subscription spam, hidden ads, and SMS premium subscription software. Interestingly, while there were 57 instances of software with hidden ads, they made up less than 5 percent of all installs.

Google Play Store Flooding with Spyware, Banking Trojan, Adware Via Games, and Utility Apps

In September, Android users were threatened by various malware, many of which was distributed via Google Play. Those were the Android.DownLoader downloaders, the Android.Banker and Android.HiddenAds banking and adware trojans, as well as other threats. Google Patches 8 Vulnerabilities in Chrome 77

Google this week announced an update for Chrome 77 that addresses 8 security vulnerabilities in the application, including 5 reported by external researchers.

The new browser update arrives only a couple of weeks after Google patched four security flaws with the release of Chrome 77.0.3865.90, including two vulnerabilities that, combined with another type of weakness, could result in a sandbox escape.

Some Android adware apps hide icons to make it hard to remove them

Uninstalling an Android app caught pushing adware is normally simple to deal with – click and drag it to the top right of the screen and into the trash can.

App gone, ideally followed up with a public-spirited one-star rating on the Google Play store to alert others to its bad behaviour.

But what happens if there’s no home screen or app tray icon?

Fake Photo Beautification Apps on Google Play can Read SMS Verification Code to Trigger Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)/Carrier Billing

At the start of the year, Google updated its permission requests in Android applications, and in particular, restricted access to SMS and CALL Log permissions. Google also added requirements for non-default applications (or those that don’t provide critical core features), allowing them to prompt and ask users for permission to access the device’s data.

This restriction is meant to prevent fake or malicious apps from abusing these features to deliver malware, steal personally identifiable information, or perpetrate fraud.

The Pixel 4’s face unlock works on sleeping, unconscious people

Google's lack of an alertness check raises security concerns.

Google's recently announced Pixel 4 has a new biometric feature—well, new for Google, at least—face unlock. Like most new biometric systems, that means we'll probably be writing about security flaws in its implementation, and the first one has already popped up before the phone is even out. You don't need to have your eyes open for the Pixel 4's face unlock to work. The flaw was first publicized by the BBC's technology reporter, Chris Fox, who was able to get face unlock to work on several people with their eyes closed.
