Interview with the developer of the Aurora App Store
The Aurora App Store is a good example of how you can do without Google. The basic idea of Open Source played an important role in the development of this Android App. Programmers all over the world should have the opportunity to profit from this open source project or to actively participate in it.
When it comes to the topic „FOSS“ (Free Open Source Software), or Open Source in general, many people still have misunderstandings. Aurora is not any different. But we hope that developer Rahul Patel can explain this to us in this interview.
Aurora OSS: What does „OSS“ mean and why Open Source?
Tarnkappe.info: Why are only Open Source applications allowed? Is it primarily about security? Or rather by principle?
Rahul Patel: That’s an interesting question. Aurora OSS (Open Source Software) is, as the name suggests, a small collection of „FOSS“ or Open Source Apps. Why only Open Source? Well, it’s because we wanted to be very transparent about what we were doing right from the start. Everyone should be able to check the code for themselves. What is also important to us is that everyone should have the opportunity to start their own open source project. Or even better, to participate actively in the development and thereby improve the quality of the software.
Tarnkappe.info: And to detect and remove possible bugs. What does that mean explicitly referring to the Aurora-Store or Aurora Droid ?
Rahul Patel: Well, the Aurora App Store is an alternative (open source) client for the Google Play Store. Therefore, like Google’s Play Store, it includes all types of apps, proprietary and non-proprietary. (Explanation: Proprietary means that only the owner has access to the source code of the program.)
The Aurora Droid, is an alternative (open source) client for F-Droid, so it only supports FOSS apps, which is the main principle of F-Droid.

Tarnkappe.info: Daniel, why do you concentrate on Android? Because it’s the better mobile OS? Or because it was easier to develop the DNS changer app for it, or get it approved by the app store operator?
Daniel Wolf: That’s a quick question to answer. Before I made Android apps, I programmed with Java. I also had an Android mobile phone, so the choice was obvious.
DNS Changer itself was created because I needed it myself.

Hacking as Direct Action against the Surveillance State
We spoke with the world-famous hacker persona and self-proclaimed anarchist revolutionary Phineas Fisher about the politics behind their attacks on the surveillance industry, the ruling party in Turkey, and the Catalan police. Here follows a retrospective on the exploits of Phineas Fisher, followed by their remarks to us.
Hacking is often depicted as something technical, a simple matter of attack and defense. Yet motivations are everything. The same technique that builds oppressive tools can be used as a weapon for emancipation. Hacking, in its purest form, is not about engineering: it is about leveraging power dynamics by short-circuiting technology. It is direct action for the new digital world we all live in.
In the shadows of the techno-empire, the hacking scene became a target for cooptation and infiltration. But the underground cannot be eradicated: from time to time, a new action breaks through the surface. Some of the hackers we admire are coders who produce tools for online privacy and anonymity. Other crews create and distribute alternative media. And then there are those who hack back.
The Lost Hacker Circles
It is no secret, for anyone paying attention, that for a long time the hacker underground was also taking sides in the ongoing war. Yet the effervescence that characterized the underground DIY scene of the past few decades has died down, or at least receded to less visible places.
Pessimists mourned the death of hacker communities in a proliferation of individual desertions. It is true that the techno-military complex succeeded in swelling the ranks of the mercenaries: there is a price at which a particular mindset can be bought, whether with money, success, the feeling of power, or the excitement of playing with fancy toys while chasing what state propaganda labels “the enemy.”

He would never act for a data octopus, he assured me. Our presentation was misleading or simply incorrect in some points. Since nobody can remember a catalogue of points of criticism presented by telephone, I asked for a transmission by e-mail. But before he could do that, we developed the idea for a community interview. It makes much more sense to ask open questions yourself instead of overloading an ancient contribution with additions. Mr. Bauer thinks the idea is good and immediately agreed to the action.

30 Years Of Linux - An Interview With Linus Torvalds: Open Source And Beyond - Part 2
The Linux kernel is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year. In part two of our interview, we conclude our conversation with Linux creator Linus Torvalds. If you haven't already, check out part one to learn all about Linux kernel development and the creation of the Git version control system.
In this second part, Linus offers insight and perspective gained from managing a large open source project for three decades. He also talks about his employment at the Linux Foundation, and describes what he does with his spare time when he's not focused on kernel development.
As to what makes an open source project successful, Linus admits, "I don't really know what the key to success is. Yes, Linux has been very successful, and clearly Git too started on the right foot, but it's always very hard to really attribute that to some deeper cause. Maybe I've just been lucky?" He goes on to offer three practical recommendations he's followed himself: be there for other developers, be open, and be honest.
