Informed consent matters even more when the patient is a child. Parents are the ones expected to weigh the benefits, risks, alternatives, and unanswered questions — then make the decision they believe is best for their child.

That means consent should never be reduced to a signature on a form. It should include clear information, time to ask questions, honest discussion of uncertainty, and the freedom to say yes, no, or not yet without pressure.

Parents don’t need to be doctors to deserve the full picture.

They need enough information to make a truly informed decision for the person depending on them most.
