Title: [ the Guardian ]
This, is a story my mother told me once when I was a child. It had been around in our village for long, passed down through generations through oral tradition. It is said to be the story of how this village came to life... or more precisely, brought back to life.
It was story of an immortal.
Once upon a time, the village was such a small settlements. To the south, was the shore to sea, while to the north was a vast desert. It still is until now. It was from the sea that a lone traveler came to the village. No one knew whether the traveler was a male or female; when the villagers spoke of the traveler, they spoke of a "them."
The traveler decided to build a place to stay for themselves, near by the village, intending to live side by side with the villagers. However, something happened to the village during the time they was occupied with their new dwelling. A group of raiders terrorised the village, along with a wave of starving undeads that always crept from the desert to the north.
In no time, the village was deserted—it became a dead village. And the traveler realized it late. They became the only one survivor, and they wasn't even part of the village to start with... but the lost of life in the village grieved them greatly.
Despite the loss, the traveler stayed near by the village. They took care of the raiders that once terrorised the village, and also repelled the horde of the undeads, preventing them to roam freely in the now dead village. They also built more farms and buildings, and a temple to the south of the village. All these, they did singlehandedly through years and years.
Sometimes the traveler would still travel away from the village, finding another settlements and wonders in the world. But in the end, they always came back to that grave of a village.
Years and years and years—no one knew how long the traveler stayed there. Not even the traveler themselves counted the passing time. They just stayed there, until one day...
One day, somehow, the traveler figured out a way to bring back life to the village. No one knew exactly how they did it. The early souls that they managed to bring back into the village couldn't recall how the traveler did it to them. Whenever the traveler brought back another new soul to the village, it would be done in the night—and the night is a dangerous time when all kind of evils prowling out and about. Normal person could hardly stay alive through the night if they were out in the wild, that was why the traveler would always told the villagers to get home before the sun set and only come out after the sun rise.
Only the traveler themselves could roam in the night, and survive for years and years.
The villagers still did not know much about the traveler, as they spoke so little of themselves. They only knew that the traveler was powerful, and that they would protect the village at all cost.
Nowadays, almost no one had ever seen the legendary traveler anymore. It is said that they once again wandering the vast world, but every several decades a rumour or story of a peculiar traveler would always be heard in the village...
A beautiful man, or perhaps a handsome woman, who comes to the village and greets the inhabitants as if they were a normal traveler. But they would be sighted near the abandoned house near by the hill by the southwest, where the legendary traveler used to live, or near around the temple that no one dared to enter, and they would vanish into the night once their visit was over...
The villagers, they call this immortal traveler as "the guardian."
