The Deal: A tale of betrayal

Part 4

"How are you feeling now my dear?" Nadia softly asks Raquel, she has observed that since the incident took place Raquel gets startled at every other sound. She even got hysteric, as if she was scared someone would hurt her, this was pretty new for Nadia who has never seen Raquel anything but calm. Raquel shudders a little at her voice still, as if it has come unexpectedly even though she already knew that Nadia was in the room. It has been three days since the incident and Raquel has yet to speak what actually happened that night. She has been awfully quiet since then. Nadia herself was perplexed for her own mind seemed to be playing games with her. She dangles between approving what she has seen that night because she saw it and felt it and disapproving it at the same time since it is ridiculous to even think that something like that could be true. But even remembering the ghastly scene scares her.

As for Raquel, she is now in pain. She has a broken head and punctured joints that ache every time she breaths. And the horrible scene of that night just doesn't leave her memory; it was worse than all the other times that she has been through this ordeal. This time she actually thought she was dead before she fainted that day.

"Raquel" Nadia speaks softly to her again caressing her head gently. "You know you can speak to me freely. Whatever you will tell me I will listen to it as a friend and keep it a secret if you wish for it to remain so. But please speak my dear, let me know what you feel." Nadia tries one last time to make her speak. She was instructed by the doctors to try and speak to her and so she tried her best not just because it was her duty but she was fond of Raquel.

Raquel looked suddenly very pale and weak after the incident. Her face has shrunk considerably and the bandages cover her forehead, her elbows, wrists, ankles, and knees. How she was injured remains a mystery as it always has been since she was first brought to the institution. She was put in with people who had a tendency to harm themselves and even now remains in that category and yet nobody knows a thing. Neither the doctors were able to find something on their own nor would Raquel open her mouth about it.

Nadia's voice brings relief to Raquel but what she said to her overwhelms her. Nadia notices the sound of sniffing as Raquel quietly cries. Nadia comforts her and at the same time, the memory of that night crosses her mind. She was scared then, she felt there was something, she knew she should run and yet she decided to look into the room. She wished she hadn't; for the sight froze her blood in her veins. Soon as she after so many struggles were able to cast the flashlight inside her room she caught a glance of so awful a creature that she won't forget till her dying breath. Those odd, hellishly hungry eyes; they dug in her like they meant to feast on her. That blood-covered mouth and that crooked nose, that putrid stench of death and decay, that feeling of cold. Even remembering them made Nadia feel nauseous. When she woke up she knew that telling others what she has seen was a sure shot way to become the butt of every joke ever, so she simply said that Raquel's body lying on the floor cast such shadows that scared her.

The Deal: A tale of betrayal

Part 4

Nadia's screams ring through the empty corridors and the memories of those who have heard it. They were genuinely convinced that Nadia bumped into a serial killer then but now that it was not so, they could still somehow feel the aftereffect of it. Everyone gets a little tensed around that time of the night although Nadia hasn't been assigned night duty eversince. Three days pass and no more blackout or screams, nothing out of ordinary.
