This is the story of how I came to be a hedgehog. You see, I wasn't always such a glorious specimen of perfection that I am now. My tale is actually a bit darker than I let on. It all started 684 years ago. I was a lemur, the people in the village next to our trees were fascinated in witchcraft and how life worked. They lack respect for anyone but their studies and Earth herself rebelled against them in fury. It was snowing, it's never snowed before. My family and I were huddled up against each other trying our hardest to keep warm. I pleaded and begged them to leave our trees behind in search of a safer home, but they refused to leave the trees, for it was all we knew as lemurs. I had gone to the top of the trees and saw a canyon far off in the distance, free of storms. There was a light there, flickering. Calling to me. I tried one last time to convince my family. They turned their back on me.

So I left... and I didn't look back once. I traveled fast, I dared not stop else I would have froze to death. After many hours of traveling, I got out of the storm and entered the canyon. The light, still flickering, lured me in. I cautiously walked in, traveling further and further into the canyon. The light, still dancing was getting brighter. I got to a bend and turned right. I saw a young girl huddled around a small fire. It filled me with fear because of the horrors we had seen at the hands of the village that violated the laws of what was right. I walked around slowly and she woke up. That's when I saw that I could trust her.

She was crying and the first thing I noticed was that she was missing her left arm. One single blue eye looked back at me. A deep scar ran over an empty eye socket marked that her other eye was lost. She had been hard in the villiages sick and twisted experiments. She called out to me asking if I was also a runaway. I got closer and she nodded as if she knew that we both had nothing to return to, and we both had nowhere else to go. This was it, our end of the road. She looked at me with her bright eye and asked me in a soft voice, "If you could have a new life, one where you can start all over again, would you take that chance little one? Even if it meant you may not be the same?" I had no fear of her now, she was just as broken as I was. Taking my hands in hers, she looked into my eyes, whispering that I have another chance. To love, live, smile, and laugh for the both of us. I didn't understand.

She kept talking as the small and weak flames started to flare up and turned a flaring blue and started swirling around us. I grew terrified, I didn't know what was happening until her legs started to catch fire, but she kept looking in my eyes. I was scared for her, she was looking at me as she kept saying words I couldn't understand. The fire started at my tail. It didn't burn like I expected it to. Like her, it was trailing up my body. She closed her eye as the fire flew up her torso and licked at her hair as she finished the final words. She opened her eye and with a tear, whispered for me to be happy. And the fire consumed us turning her into ash that was picked up by the wind.

I woke up what felt like days later, and crawled over to a small pond to drink. And that's when I saw it. My reflection was different. I had quills, a different nose, and a different face, but the most immediate difference was my eye... It was her bright blue. She will always be a part of me, that incredible, kind and caring girl who sacrificed herself to give me a new life. I'll never forget her.
