โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“ฑ Email & Mobile Notifications in Driving Loyalty

Generating more direct traffic to websites and apps is an important priority for publishers, with #email #newsletters a particularly favoured tactic for retaining subscribers but also for attracting new users. The Washington Post operates around 70 different newsletters & has found that recipients consume around three times as much content as those who donโ€™t use email news. RIโ€™s own data this year show that 42% of US digital subscribers have used one or more email newsletters in the last week compared with 35% in the UK but just 17% in Norway and 19% in Sweden. It is clear this is one area where Nordic publishers could learn a few tricks from the United States.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ’ฐ Libra: Facebook confirms its cryptocurrency launching in 2020

#Libra is designed not to be a speculative asset, like #Bitcoin, but a form of digital money backed by a reserve of assets.

The company has formed the nonprofit Libra Association with 27 other partners to oversee Libra and its development. The partnership includes venture capital firms, nonprofit organizations, #cryptocurrency firms, and massive corporate financial, telecommunications, and technology service providers, including #Coinbase, #Mastercard, #Visa, #eBay, #PayPal, #Stripe, #Spotify, #Uber, #Lyft, and #Vodafone.

While the Libra Association will have members based globally, it will be headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ

Facebook has a business incentive to build on top of the Libra #blockchain, and itโ€™s launching its own subsidiary to do just that called #Calibra (see the GIF below - Credit: Facebook). According to Kevin Weil, Facebook's VP of Product, Calibra will live inside of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp at launch, but will also have a standalone iOS and Android app.

๐Ÿ“‰ Facebook Employees are NOT as Happy with Mark Zuckerberg as They Used to Be

#Facebook employees have long been known for their fierce loyalty to the company and its founder Mark Zuckerberg. In the aftermath of numerous privacy debacles, including ones in which Facebook has exposed usersโ€™ personal information and facilitated attempts to undermine American democracy, that enthusiasm seems to have flagged.

The Facebook CEO saw his ranking among top US CEOs plummet this year, from No. 16 in 2018 to No. 55 this year, though he does have an approval rating of 94 percent, according to new data from Glassdoor, a site where employees can anonymously rate their jobs and their CEOs. His approval rating was 96 percent last year.

๐Ÿ“ฑ For App Makers: Apple's App Store vs Google Play

Despite the fact that the installed base of #Android devices is significantly larger than it is for #iOS devices, app publishers still seem to find larger earnings potential on #Appleโ€™s #AppStore compared to #GooglePlay.

According to Sensor Towerโ€™s estimates, the top 100 iOS app publishers made $84 million on average in Q1 2019, compared to $51 million for the most successful Android app makers. The difference between the two platforms is even more pronounced when excluding games publishers. The highest-grossing non-gaming app publishers for iOS outperformed the top 100 on Googleโ€™s Play Store by 232 percent.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Smartphone Dominance

Following up on the poll above, although not producing the same results, here are some interesting stats from Pew Research Centre: #Smartphone users are now more likely to go online using their mobile phone than with some other type of device.

For smartphone owners, their mobile devices now outpace more traditional means of accessing the web. 46% of them say when using the internet, they mostly do so on their phone. This represents a 12% increase from 2013 when 34% of these users said this.

At the same time, the share of smartphone users who say a desktop, laptop or tablet computer is their primary device for going online has fallen from 53% in 2013 to 30% today. Roughly a quarter of smartphone users say they equally use a cellphone or a desktop, laptop or tablet computer when going online, up from 12% six years prior.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Worldwide Mobile App Revenue

Global app revenue reached $39 billion in the first half of 2019, that means an increase of 15% compared to the same period of 2018.

Consumers spent an estimated $25.5 billion globally on #Appleโ€™s #AppStore during the first half, an increase of 13.2% YoY from $22.6 billion in Q1 and Q2 of 2018. The amount generated by Appleโ€™s platform was approximately 80% greater than #Google Playโ€™s estimated gross revenue of $14.2 billion for the half. That was up 19.6% YoY from first half 2018โ€™s total of $11.8 billion.

๐Ÿ“‰ Instagram Engagement Rate is Facing a Massive Decrease

An analysis of 1.4m posts from 3,637 brand accounts has revealed that overall engagement on #Instagram has seen a sharp decline since early May 2019. The maximum average engagement rate in April was 1.54%, but this has now dropped to about 0.9%, a decrease from earlier this year of 1.1%. This represents an 18% decline in average engagements (mostly likes) since the beginning of the year.

But itโ€™s not just brands that are suffering... Read more on Trust Insights.

โšก๏ธ Bitcoin Uses More Electricity Than Switzerland

Among other things, #Bitcoin has been criticized for price volatility, use in illegal transactions and thefts from exchanges. It has also proven highly controversial for the sheer amount of energy it requires. The University of Cambridge has released a new online tool that estimates the level of electricity the #CryptoCurrency network uses and compares it with other entities.

It estimates that Bitcoin uses 61.76 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricty per year, more than many countries and around 0.28 percent of worldwide electricity consumption.

The Czech Republic ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฟ consumes an estimated 62.34 TWh while Switzerland ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ consumes 58.46 TWh annually by comparison. In fact, if Bitcoin was a country, it would be the 41st most-energy-demanding nation on earth.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป StackOverflow's 2019 Developer Survey Results ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป

This year, nearly 90,000 developers took the survey. Here are some key results:

- For the 7th year in a row, #JavaScript is the most commonly used programming language, but #Python has risen in the ranks again.

- Over half of respondents had written their first line of code by the time they were 16, although this experience varies by country & by gender.

- Respondents were asked to think about the last time they solved coding problems with & without #StackOverflow. The data indicate that Stack Overflow saves a developer 30 to 90 minutes of time per week!

- About 65% of professional developers on Stack Overflow contribute to #OpenSource projects once a year or more.

- #Reddit & #YouTube were the most common answers to what social media site they use the most. (No #Telegram in the list! Wtf, StackOverflow!?)
