🤝 Microsoft might be doing to Slack what Facebook did to Snapchat

Techie's favorite communications tool, Slack, is losing ground to its biggest rival, Microsoft Teams, which has copied its way into popularity. In other words, Slack has the same problem as Snapchat, which has suffered from its bigger rival Facebook’s relentless appropriation.

Currently, over 13 million people use #Microsoft’s Teams app for chat, meetings and document collaboration every day, compared to #Slack's 10+ million daily users in the three months that ended on January 31.

Microsoft, at one point, had even considered buying Slack. Instead, nearly four years after Slack’s debut, Microsoft launched Teams, which has since adopted many of its competitor’s functions, including the basic premise of creating an online office space for coworkers to collaborate and communicate.

❗️ Apparently, Microsoft Teams isn’t better than Slack, but it is freer and was tolerable as a Slack alternative!

😶 The 20-year-old entrepreneur is a lie

Good ideas come at any age, but it takes experience to turn them into success stories. Steve Jobs was 21 when he helped found Apple, but he was a 43-year-old CEO when the company created the iMac.

According to a working paper from MIT Sloan professor Pierre Azoulay and PhD student Daniel Kim, the average age of entrepreneurs who’ve started companies and gone on to hire at least one employee is 42 years old.

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates started their respective companies in their early 20s, as indicated by the vertical lines. But Apple and Microsoft stocks peaked when both were in their 40s.

#Facebook was the most downloaded #SocialMedia app worldwide for 2Q19 with close to 174 million installs.

#TikTok was the second most installed social media app worldwide last quarter with more than 156 million installs. #Instagram, #Snapchat, and #Likee rounded out the top five most installed social media apps worldwide for the quarter.

📈 Social Media Users Pass 3.5 Billion

The number of people around the world using #SocialMedia grew by more than a quarter of a billion over the past 12 months, to reach the 3.5 billion milestone by July 2019.

More than 46% of the world’s total population now uses social media, but if we focus on ‘eligible audiences’ – people aged 13 and above – the penetration rate increases to 59%, with the latest trends suggesting that it will pass 60% within the next few months.

👻 Snapchat’s Audience Jumps

Data published in #Snapchat’s self-serve tools show that the platform’s advertising audience jumped by a massive 19% in the past three months, reaching a total of 369 million users by July 2019. That translates to an increase of almost 60 million users since April, with growth rates consistent across all age groups.

It’s not just Snapchat’s data that shows the platform is growing, either. According to App Annie, Snapchat saw a surge in downloads with the release of new #AR filters and its new, faster #Android mobile app, over the past three months.

📈 TikTok User Spending Set New Record in June, Climbing 588% to More Than $10 Million

#ByteDance’s short video social app #TikTok continues to experience impressive growth in user spending, hitting a new record of $10.8 million last month.

TikTok’s gross revenue from in-app purchases of virtual currency (known as Coins) was up 588 percent year-over-year from $1.6 million in June 2018. Spending in the app increased 19 percent month-over-month from $9 million in May.

This increase in spending has been most pronounced during the first half of 2019 and is being driven primarily by users in China, where gross revenue for the app has increased 271 percent since January. By comparison, TikTok’s revenue from IAP last month was down 16 percent from January in the United States.
