โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ’ก The Offlines!

In a time when your entire life can essentially be lived online, there are increasingly fewer aspects of existence which remain untouched by the #internet. Likewise, the number of people that don't use the internet is also decreasing. As data from the ONS shows, though, there is still a fair share of people in the UK that have never used the internet and these differences vary significantly by country/region. In Northern Ireland, 13 percent have never been online, while in London the share is only 6 percent.

โ€‹โ€‹๐ŸŒ The Internet's History

The #Internet's history goes back some decades by now โ€“ #Email has been around since the 1960s, file sharing since at least the 1970s, and TCP/IP was standardized in 1982. But it was the creation of the world wide web (www) in 1989 that revolutionised our history of communication. The inventor of the world wide web was the English scientist Tim Berners-Lee who created a system to share information through a network of computers. At the time he was working for the European physics laboratory CERN in the Swiss Alps.

The chart below shows the share and number of people that are using the Internet, which in these statistics refers to all those who have used the Internet in the last 3 months.

โ€‹โ€‹๐ŸŒ US Internet and Social Media Usage Plateau

#Internet usage, as well as #SocialMedia adoption and device ownership, have seemingly reached a plateau after several years of growth. For example, the percentage of US adults using social media rests at 69% this year, unchanged from 2016.

Internet use, for its part, now stands at 89% of US adults, up only marginally from 2016 (88%). And device use is largely unchanged, too:

- 95% of US adults own or use a cellphone, flat from 2016;
- 77% own or use a #smartphone, unchanged from 2016;
- 73% own or use a desktop or laptop computer, down from 78% in 2016; and
- 53% own or use a tablet, up slightly from 51%.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Mobile Data Traffic Outlook

Total mobile data traffic continues to increase globally & is predicted to reach 131 exabytes (EB) per month by the end of 2024. This means a 30% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2018 & 2024.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India has the highest average monthly usage, reaching 9.8 gigabytes (GB) by the end of 2018.

๐ŸŒ North East Asia is the worldโ€™s most populous region, and has the largest share of global mobile data traffic. In 2024, total mobile data traffic in the region is estimated to reach 39EB per month, equaling 30% of the world total. The rapid growth in mobile broadband subscriptions is expected to continue, with China alone set to add around 190m mobile broadband subscriptions between 2018 & 2024. This growth, together with increased usage per smartphone, will drive total mobile data traffic up to 30EB per month in China.

๐Ÿ“ฐ News Consumption in the UK (2019)

Key findings:

- While TV remains the most-used platform for #news nowadays by UK adults, usage has decreased since last year (75% vs. 79% in 2018). At the same time, use of social media for news use has gone up (49% vs. 44%).

- Use of TV for news is much more likely among the 65+ age group (94%), while the #internet is the most-used platform for news consumption among 16-24s and those from a minority ethnic background.

- Fewer UK adults use BBC TV channels for news compared to last year, while more are using #SocialMedia platforms.

- When rated by their users on measures such as quality, accuracy, trustworthiness and impartiality, magazines continue to perform better than other news platforms, followed by #TV.

โŒš๏ธ What Types of Media Take Up Most of Your Time?

The time people spend with print newspapers and magazines has dwindled, with media #attention being dominated by the internet in 2019. That trend will only increase over the next two years, according to Zenith Media.
Consumers have limited time and attention, pushing print to the side as they move onto digital channels. The daily time each consumer worldwide will spend on the #internet this year is forecasted to hit 170 minutes daily, roughly 3 hours a day. By 2021, consumers are estimated to spend 192 minutes per day on the internet.
