β˜•οΈ Improve Your Morning Routine

Keeping up with the news isn't as easy as it used to be. There are way too many news sources, but not all of them are worth your time and attention β€” even assuming they're not fake!
One of my favourite ways to stay in the know is Morning Brew's daily newsletter. It sums up everything from Wall Street to Silicon Valley for me and over 1.8 million other subscribers!

I highly recommend it.

β€‹β€‹βŒšοΈ Smart Devices Are Eating the Accessible Watches Market (under Β£500)

- While luxury’s moat remains, watchmakers have struggled to build hype for accessibly priced timepieces as consumers increasingly abandon them for smart devices.

- Popular upstart brands like Mvmt and Daniel Wellington signal that success in this price category is possible with the right marketing.

- Brands need to focus on their history and heritage: reissues of iconic watches like the original G-Shock have performed well with consumers.

A drop in demand for cheaper watches is causing trouble for Switzerland’s manufacturing base and Swiss watch companies specialising in watches under Β£500. Since 2015, the number of Swiss watches being exported has declined by a third, per the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, and most of that shrinkage has been in watches that cost under 200 CHF (Β£164). Exports are approaching the lows seen in the mid-1980s when Japanese quartz technology brought a raft of cheaper competitors for established brands.

🦠 Instagram May Offer Clues About the Spread of the Coronavirus

#Instagram is known mainly for stylish selfies and #FOMO-inducing travel pictures. Could the photo-sharing service also be used to track the spread of a pandemic? As governments and health-care providers around the world seek out suspected carriers of the new #coronavirus, the popular social networkβ€”which people use to share pictures and videos of places they visit, and more generally to socialiseβ€”could prove valuable for tracing the path of the virus.

β€‹β€‹πŸ€³ Video Chat Apps Rise to Prominence Amid Pandemic

As a significant part of the world population is currently on lockdown in an attempt to contain the #coronavirus pandemic, people are turning to technology to work, communicate and stay in touch with their loved ones.

Unsurprisingly, workplace communication tools such as #Slack and #MicrosoftTeams have seen a jump in usage as working from home has become the new norm in recent weeks. People are also making use of similar tools in their personal lives, however, leading to a spike in downloads of #VideoChat apps.

According to Priori Data, global downloads of #Skype, #Houseparty and #Zoom each surged by more than 100% in March, with the latter proving particularly popular among people meeting up virtually while being confined to their homes. The videoconferencing app was downloaded nearly 27 million times this month, up from just 2.1 million times in January.

While Zoom is definitely the rising star among video chat apps, Skype remains far ahead in terms of active users. According to Priori Data, the #Microsoft-owned service had 59 million daily active users on its iOS and Android apps in March, compared to just 4.3 million for Zoom. It needs to be noted though, that many people also use Skype for other ways of communication, while Zoom has specialized on video conferences, so it may not be a fair comparison to make.

πŸ“° Social media as a Source of News

The world of news media – whose very purpose is to bring truth to the masses – has been plagued by distrust for a number of years.

Terms like β€œfake news” are now part of our lexicon, and for a while now, #SocialMedia has been firmly under the spotlight for its distribution of inaccurate information.

We saw consumers lose some of their trust in social media in the aftermath of data privacy scandals and Russian bots. But with the growing public health crisis, social media as a news source has made a resurgence.

Nearly half of internet users in the U.S. and UK are now reading more news stories on social media.

This is more than the number who are increasingly keeping in touch with family and friends, watching entertainment content, and sharing photos and videos – making news consumption the fastest growing behavior on social platforms.
