Turkiye Masses Troops On Syria Border, Invasion 'Imminent': Report US officials warn that a 'cross border operation is imminent' as Turkiye amasses its troops on its southern border The Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) announced the start of an…
Turkiye Provides 'Air Support' To Extremists Violating Ceasefire In North Syria: SDF

The US-backed militia says it downed an advanced Turkish drone and has warned that Ankara is massing its troops near the Syrian border in preparation for a 'possible invasion'

The Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on 18 December that the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) has continued to launch attacks on the city of Kobane and the strategic Tishreen Dam in northern Syria with air support from Ankara.

“Despite ongoing de-escalation efforts by the United States of America, the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries continued their attacks on numerous areas in the vicinity of Kobani, the Tishreen Dam, and Ain Issa yesterday and today,” the SDF said in a statement.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) confirmed that the SNA once more violated a US-mediated ceasefire agreement by launching a “surprise attack on [SDF positions] around the Tishreen Dam and Qaraqozak Bridge in eastern Aleppo countryside.”

“According to reliable SOHR sources, the attack was accompanied by intense aerial and ground bombardment in attempts to take control of Qaraqozak Bridge and Tishreen Dam, where a Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drone was shot down, and a Turkish radar vehicle was destroyed in the area by SDF,” the UK-based monitor reported on Wednesday.

🇦🇿🇪🇺Azerbaijan Steps Up Relations with NATO
Military reform aligns with Western standards

✍️Author: Alexandr Svaranc

➡️Azerbaijan is accelerating military reforms aligning with NATO standards, driven by its strategic alliance with Turkey and post-Karabakh victory ambitions. The transformation reflects Baku's shifting geopolitical orientation from its former CSTO membership toward Western security frameworks.

➡️The 2020 Karabakh success, achieved with Turkish military advisors and Israeli technology, demonstrated the effectiveness of NATO-compatible tactics and equipment. This victory reinforced Azerbaijan's neutral stance while deepening integration with the Organization of Turkic States—increasingly functioning as a de facto "Asian bureau" of NATO under Turkish leadership.

➡️Recent high-level engagements include NATO delegation visits to Baku and President Aliyev's emphasis on standardizing Azerbaijan's military with Turkish models. The proposed 2026 Turkic states' military exercises in Azerbaijan would further institutionalize defense cooperation outside traditional alliances.

🟦However, this reorientation risks regional destabilization. While Western powers seek control over East-West transit routes and Central Asian resources, neighboring nations like Kazakhstan maintain balanced relations with Russia, recognizing that sustainable security requires accommodating major powers' interests rather than exclusive Western alignment.

🇹🇷💥🛥What conclusions will Turkey draw from the tanker attacks in the Black Sea?
Repeated Ukrainian drone strikes on tankers near its coast force Ankara to balance its mediator ambitions with the hard realities of NATO alliances and its own national security

✍️Author: Alexandr Svaranc
Doctor of Political Science, Professor, expert on Middle Eastern countries

➡️The recent wave of Ukrainian drone attacks on tankers carrying Russian cargo in the Black Sea, including near Turkish waters, presents a direct challenge to Ankara. While Turkey's Foreign Ministry has expressed concern, framing the strikes as a threat to civilian shipping and the environment, the incidents reveal deeper tensions. They highlight Ukraine's—and its backers'—unwillingness to yield to U.S.-led peace initiatives and their attempt to expand the conflict zone, potentially drawing Turkey into the fray.

➡️Ankara's dilemma is complex. It positions itself as a crucial mediator, with a history of facilitating the grain deal and prisoner exchanges, and seeks a role in a future peacekeeping mission. However, its balanced stance is undermined by its continued military-technical support to Kyiv and its membership in NATO, where allies like the UK are implicated in enabling these very maritime attacks to sabotage Russian exports and disrupt global energy markets.

➡️The attacks threaten Turkey’s core interests: the safety of vital shipping lanes, the stability of its mediation platform, and even its energy security, recalling past Ukrainian sabotage attempts against the Turkish Stream pipeline. While Ankara has issued diplomatic condemnations, the withdrawal of a major Turkish shipping company from Russian routes signals that economic fear may trump diplomatic principle.

🟦Turkey now faces a critical test. It must decide whether its concern translates into decisive action to secure the Black Sea, or if it will remain a constrained mediator, its strategic autonomy limited by the conflicting pressures of its alliances and its national interests.
