1/ Some thoughts on how IPv6 and Blockchain can benefit one another.
A 🧵 based on my talk at the IEEE Exeter Blockchain Event last week.
2/ Bitcoin transactions (2009) are clearly inspired by IPv6 packets (1998).
- Input addresses, output addresses, data payloads
- Flow/sequence number
- 4gb data size
- Fixed protocol
- Unlimited address space
3/ IPv6 can help a Blockchain node network scale.
IPv6 multicast groups allow nodes to distribute blocks using lower bandwidth, and for users to quickly and efficiently submit transactions to as many nodes as possible.
4/ IPv6 can facilitate user-to-user payments.
The BIP270 user-to-user payment protocol of BSV lends itself to IPv6’s connectivity model, which removes the need for gatekeepers. This is not true of other Blockchains
5/ Wallet protocols such as BIP32 are efficient at managing many short-lived addresses. They allow for disaster recovery from seed and cryptographically linked addresses.
IPv6 address management is relatively new - a lot can be learned from Blockchain
6/ In terms of UX, Paymail can leverage the existing DNS framework to allow a single human-readable alias to be used for multiple IPv6 addresses
7/ Cryptographically Generated Addresses link the Internet Protocol with the Bitcoin protocol.
Figure from Bos and Öznan, 2009.
