Book Review: "Hijacking Bitcoin"
Back in a simpler, more innocent era, from around 2012-2014, when I was still young, dumb, and full of Bitcoin enthusiasm, it used to be that I couldn't stop talking about Bitcoin. To anyone who would listen, and more than a few people who wouldn't. "We just met? You've said absolutely nothing to indicate an interest in hearing about this subject? You haven't mentioned a single topic that's even tangentially related? You're in this country as a tourist and don't actually speak much English? You actually just stopped me to ask directions to the nearest restroom? Well, hey, if you're looking for a place that's full of shit, let me tell you a little about something called 'the Federal Reserve'..." En una era más simple e inocente, alrededor de 2012-2014, cuando todavía era joven, tonto y lleno de entusiasmo por Bitcoin, me sucedía que no podía dejar de hablar de Bitcoin. A cualquiera que quisiera escuchar, y a más de unas pocas personas que no lo harían. "¿Nos acabamos de conocer? ¿No has dicho absolutamente nada que indique interés en escuchar sobre este tema? ¿No has mencionado ni un solo tema que esté siquiera tangencialmente relacionado? Estás en este país como turista y en realidad no hablas mucho". ¿En inglés? ¿De verdad me detuviste para preguntarme cómo llegar al baño más cercano? Bueno, oye, si estás buscando un lugar que esté lleno de mierda, déjame contarte un poco sobre algo llamado 'la Reserva Federal'..." En retrospectiva, a veces, mi evangelismo sobre Bitcoin puede incluso haber rozado lo ligeramente desagradable.
Pero más recientemente, cuando alguien en mi círculo que todavía piensa en mí como "el chico de Bitcoin" me hace una pregunta relacionada con Bitcoin, mi respuesta ha tendido a ser más del tipo: <da una larga calada al cigarrillo y mira fijamente el media distancia> "Es... complicado. ¿Cuánto tiempo tienes? No importa. Supongo que la verdadera pregunta es ¿cuánta energía tengo? Probablemente no sea suficiente. Así que, um, sí, claro, compra algunas acciones de Bitcoin". ETF si quieres. No lo sé. Tal vez eso funcione para ti".
Pero ahora, con el lanzamiento de este libro, finalmente tengo algo que puedo simplemente entregarle a la gente y decirles: "¿Realmente quieres saber la historia detrás de Bitcoin? ¿La verdadera historia? Lee esto".
De hecho, estaba un poco nervioso cuando se anunció este libro. Porque esta es una historia que pedía a gritos ser contada, o al menos que finalmente se contara en un solo lugar y de una manera un tanto "definitiva". Así que realmente esperaba que Roger y Steve lo hicieran bien. Y me complace informar que así fue. El libro es fenomenal, ciertamente mejor de lo que esperaba e incluso mejor de lo que esperaba que fuera. Lo leí principalmente, para saber si era algo que pudiera recomendar a otros. No pensé que necesitaba leerlo por mí mismo porque, después de todo, "lo viví". Había observado en tiempo real cómo se desarrollaba el "secuestro" descrito en el libro y luché sin éxito para detenerlo. Pero me equivoqué. Si bien conocía quizás el 85% de la historia que se describe en este libro, había un buen 15% de eventos y conexiones que no conocía. E incluso mucho de lo que sabía, lo había olvidado. Después de todo, estos acontecimientos tuvieron lugar durante un período de varios años que ahora se remonta a más de una década. El impacto de verlos todos presentados juntos en una narrativa clara, integral y aun así sucinta fue extremadamente poderoso.
Después de terminar el libro, no pude evitar pensar: "No veo cómo alguien que realmente esté operando de buena fe podría leer este libro y no estar de acuerdo con la conclusión de que el proyecto Bitcoin fue secuestrado". Por supuesto, la parte más realista de mí sabe por amarga experiencia que el razonamiento motivado impulsado por cosas como el tribalismo y la falta de voluntad para admitir el error es algo muy poderoso. Pero aún así, este es absolutamente un libro que puede hacer cambiar de opinión y abrir los ojos. Cómpralo. Léelo. Compártelo.
