The UK government is trying to become a more digital state and blockchain can help ensure data remains secure and accessible only by those who should have access, which will give citizens greater confidence to trust the government going forward.

The UK recently revealed additional details of its ‘blueprint for modern digital government,’ first announced last year, regarding the introduction of digital IDs that the government hopes will streamline routine processes for both the state and the public.

By the end of 2027, digital credentials will open up an ever-growing variety of services, accelerating processes, cutting costs and reducing hassle. Services currently overseen by a variety of departments and agencies will be connected via a unified, simplified access point.

Among the first features coming to the new GOV.UK wallet & app will be digital driving licenses, one of the most popular methods of proving one’s identity. The technology will incorporate security features such as facial recognition checks.

The government stressed that the new app will be—for the time being, at least—purely optional, but this is clearly the way the wind is blowing. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how swiftly the app is adopted … and how soon the first security issues are identified.

Let’s face it. Even giant corporations like Microsoft and Apple with their armies of engineers are often forced to rush out a software patch within days/weeks of a major new product release. But for governments, such slip-ups could prove fatal for adoption.

And that’s not even considering malicious actors both foreign and domestic seeking to exploit these treasure troves of extremely sensitive data. Stated simply, there’s an awful lot riding here for both the government and the citizens being asked to test drive this app.

Blockchain tech can offer additional levels of security for the data nestling behind this app. Decentralization means a less concentrated target for bad actors, while the immutability of blockchain-based data ensures that once inscribed, it cannot be altered.

Also, the visibility of blockchain-based transactions offers a guarantee of provenance that traditional data management tools can’t hope to provide. In short, there’s a lot of blockchain benefits here to consider, because the government is only going to get one shot at the public trust.

Obviously, given the goal is onboarding tens of millions of Brits, only blockchains that can store serious amounts of data need apply. Similarly, the volume of transactions associated with these millions of records will require fees that won’t break the Bank of England.
