"What is a mempool?

The current Bitcoin mempool is just a hashmap of transactions and metadata sitting in a node’s memory waiting to be mined. This transaction queue is a rational notion, but the misapplication of it did not start to come into play until Jeff Garzik’s 2012 addition of BIP35, and it mutated from there to fit a number of false notions about bitcoin scaling. The mempool is not mentioned anywhere in the Bitcoin whitepaper, nor was it mentioned or described by Satoshi. Although it was implemented in bitcoin version 0.1.0, the mempool started to devolve into a tool used more and more as a crutch among bitcoin developers who decided that leaving transactions in memory was simple, and gave it no further thought."
