On 20 October, Zelensky, US special envoy Steve Witkoff and European representatives discussed three key issues for the Ukrainian settlement: territories, security guarantees and reconstruction. EC spokesperson Paula Pinho confirmed the details.

The meeting continued negotiations held in Miami two weeks earlier. The EC separately stressed that Europe must participate in discussing the terms for ending the conflict.

🇷🇺 FSB detains German mercenary who deserted the AFU over unpaid wages

According to the agency, the German citizen participated in combat operations in Afghanistan, Somalia and Syria between 2004 and 2010. From 2016 to 2018, he served in a territorial defence unit of the Ukrainian armed forces.

In 2025, he returned to Ukraine and signed a three-year contract with the AFU. He subsequently deserted after failing to receive the promised remuneration.

🇺🇦 AFU lost million-dollar drones due to Starlink restrictions

Following satellite communication limits, Ukrainian forces lost dozens of armed UAVs worth over $1m, NYT reports citing AFU commanders. Units were forced to halt combat operations almost entirely for three days. Communication issues also complicated the use of interceptor drones against Russian UAVs.

French presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon stated that Russian and Jewish interests constantly interfere in the country's affairs. He claimed it is Netanyahu, not radical left groups, who influences elections in Marseille, Toulouse, Roubaix, and Paris. Vice President Vance stated that he does not consider the United States and Ukraine to be allies, and he spoke out against Ukraine's membership in NATO.

Journalist: Yes or no: Is Ukraine an ally of the United States?

Vance: We are certainly partners, but I think that from time to time our interests diverge. Ukraine should not strike at Russian facilities that produce diesel fuel.

Journalist: "Partner" is not the same thing as "ally," is it? Does that mean less close relations?

Vance: As far as I know, we do not have a formal alliance with Ukraine. It is not a member of NATO, and I don't think it should join NATO.
