The American University of Beirut has been operating for over 100 years and is considered one of the country's most prestigious universities. Its professors, who hold US citizenship, did not leave Lebanon even during the civil war of 1975-1990. Moreover, when the president of the University, David Dodge, was kidnapped by Hezbollah supporters and spent a year in captivity, his colleagues continued to work.
