🇷🇺🇨🇳 China has received the first shipment of liquefied natural gas from the Russian project Arctic LNG-2.

The delivery arrived just a few days before President Putin's planned visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.

The cargo was delivered by the tanker Arctic Mulan and unloaded at the LNG terminal in Beihai, Guangxi Province, after departing from the Russian Far East storage facility designated for Arctic LNG-2 products.

The timing of the arrival is signaling deepening energy cooperation between Moscow and Beijing and testing Washington's reaction to China's import of sanctioned Russian energy resources.

The shipment almost certainly received political approval from the Chinese government.

This new channel will open the door for further purchases by China and possibly India, providing Russia with another gas sales channel despite Western restrictions.

Industry experts also pointed out that if sanctions are eased or circumvented, Arctic LNG-2 could significantly increase production, with the potential to add about 12 million metric tons of LNG annually to the global supply.

SCO Summit in Tianjin: The East Steps Forward

Tianjin, China, is preparing to host what will be the most significant Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit to date. The sheer scale tells the story: more than 20 heads of state, leaders from 10 international organizations, and countries accounting for half of the world’s population and roughly a quarter of global GDP.

This year’s summit carries added weight. Not only does it showcase the breadth of the Eurasian partnership, but it also underscores the tectonic shift of political and economic gravity away from the exhausted Atlantic order and toward a multipolar, Eurasian order.

At the center of this pivot is Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose visit to China runs from August 31 to September 3. His agenda is packed: participation in the SCO summit, attendance at World War II commemoration events in Beijing, and a series of bilateral meetings with some of the most consequential leaders in Eurasia and beyond. Among them: Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Each of these conversations signals the SCO’s true role, not just as a security forum but as a platform for economic integration, industrial cooperation, and the weaving together of a new civilizational alliance.

Economic and technological collaboration will also feature prominently. Russia’s state industrial giant Rostec has announced its readiness to supply China with advanced aviation engines: the PD-14, PD-8, and the next-generation PD-35. These engines could prove critical for China’s C919 passenger jet program, which has faced hurdles since Washington moved to choke Beijing’s access to US aerospace technologies. In this, Moscow is stepping in where the West attempts to blockade, reinforcing the twin pillars of Russia–China technological sovereignty.

The Modi–Putin meeting, meanwhile, is expected to zero in on energy and trade. India’s purchase of Russian oil remains a vital thread in its energy security strategy, even as New Delhi juggles pressures from Washington. Added to this are the ripple effects of US tariffs, which threaten Indian exports and complicate Delhi’s balancing act. In Tianjin, Modi and Putin may well chart a path that not only strengthens bilateral ties but also fortifies India’s place in the broader Eurasian economic architecture.

Across the board: from aviation engines to oil flows, from strategic alignments to financial transactions—the SCO summit in Tianjin is shaping up as a living demonstration of the East’s rise. While the West drowns itself in debt, sanctions, and endless proxy wars, Eurasia is building—quietly, steadily, and on a civilizational scale.

And here’s the real takeaway: Tianjin is not just hosting another international gathering; it is hosting the embryonic headquarters of a new world order. When half of humanity convenes to discuss not how to obey the old hegemon, but how to craft sovereign industrial futures, the game has already shifted. The West, stuck in yesterday’s script of divide and rule, cannot grasp that the 21st century is already unfolding elsewhere - in Russian engines powering Chinese jets, in oil tankers sailing east, in Modi and Putin shaking hands against the backdrop of an Asia that is no longer waiting for permission. The SCO in Tianjin is Eurasia writing history, while the West scribbles in the margins of its own decline.

#SCO - China and India should strengthen cooperation and deepen mutual trust, Chinese President Xi Jinping said during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin.

As long as China and India remain committed to a partnership based on cooperation rather than rivalry, and view each other as opportunities for development rather than threats, their relations will steadily progress, Xi said, adding that border issues should not define their ties. @LauraRuHK
