根據BBC委托調查機關報告，有三分之二私人電郵信箱收到的郵件，包含一隻可統稱為spy pixels的追踪檔案。
根據報道，英國一眾大公司包括HSBC都有用這一類型追蹤檔案。
Spy pixels可用來記錄：
- 時間 (if and when an email is opened)
- 位置 (the user's rough physical location, deduced from their internet protocol (IP) address - in some cases making it possible to see the street the recipient is on)
- 習慣 (what device or devices are involved)
暫時似乎避無可避。唯一可以做到的就是不開啟擺明是市場推廣 (例如叫你申請信用卡申請貸款等等) 的電子郵件。
