Here are ten practical tips to help you improve your writing
Apostrophes are used for possessive cases and contractions. It's important to know the difference:
Possessive: "its" (belonging to it), "their" (belonging to them).
Contractions: "it's" (it is), "they're" (they are).
Commas help separate introductory elements from the main part of the sentence, making it clearer:
Example: "After a hard day at work, Jean loves to relax in the backyard."
Homophones sound alike but have different meanings, and understanding suffix rules aids in correct spelling:
Homophones: "too" vs. "two", "your" vs. "you're", "accept" vs. "except".
Endings: Use "-able" when a whole root word is used (e.g., "fashionable"), and "-ible" if a word doesnβt make sense without the ending (e.g., "divisible").
Articles help specify nouns:
Indefinite ('a/an'): Used for general references, e.g., "Someone called a doctor."
Definite ('the'): Used for specific references, e.g., "Someone called the doctor living next door."
Appositives are phrases that provide additional information about a noun and are often set off by commas if non-essential:
Essential: "The popular sitcom Brian O'Brien was cancelled after seven years."
Non-essential: "Brian O'Brien, the popular sitcom, was cancelled after seven years."
Use commas to set off non-essential clauses that add extra information but are not crucial to the sentence's meaning:
Essential: "No one trusts politicians who lie."
Non-essential: "Mr. Trout, who is wearing the red shirt, announced his mayoral candidacy this week."
Semicolons link closely related independent clauses, showing a relationship between them:
Example: "The family had never seen Mrs. Baker so mad; everyone thought the maid was going to have a heart attack."
Different quantifiers are used for countable and non-countable nouns:
Countable: Use "many" for items like "dress, house, car".
Non-countable: Use "much/a lot" and "little/few" for items like "money, snow, time".
Expanding your vocabulary improves language skills. Engage with diverse reading materials:
Read books, magazine articles, and newspaper columns.
If you do not use word processing software like Microsoft Word, you can also use online spellcheckers like spellchecker.net/spellcheck and quietly read the text aloud to catch more mistakes.
