90% of government notices are soft threats — they’re testing whether you’ll comply without question. This sentence forces them to either back up the claim with law or drop it.

Here’s why it works: most notices are administrative, not judicial. They’re sent by clerks, not judges. When you challenge jurisdiction in writing, the sender has to prove they have authority over you. Most of the time, they can’t. So the letter just stops.

A legal strategist taught corporate clients this trick for decades. When you receive a fine, a tax audit notice, or a compliance warning, respond with that sentence and add: “Provide the statute and code that grant you authority to compel my action.” Half the time, they can’t — because that authority doesn’t exist.
