Electric Vehicles Face New Ferry Restrictions Across Europe

Travelers planning to take an electric vehicle by ferry this summer are being urged to check operator policies before departure, as several ferry companies have introduced new restrictions over battery fire safety concerns.

Norwegian operator Havila Voyages has implemented a complete ban on battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The company says that although battery fires are rare, the potential consequences at sea are too serious to ignore. According to Havila, an uncontrolled EV battery fire onboard could force the evacuation of the ship.

In Greece, authorities have taken a different approach by allowing electric vehicles on ferries only if their battery is charged to no more than 40% before boarding.

While many ferry operators across Europe continue to transport electric vehicles, policies now vary significantly between companies and countries. Travelers are advised to verify the latest rules with their ferry operator before traveling to avoid unexpected delays or denied boarding.
