A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck Colombia and was also felt in other parts of Latin America, from Panama to Ecuador.

The earthquake, whose epicenter was in San José del Palmar in the Chocó Department, about 400 kilometers west of the capital Bogotá, was recorded at 7:34 a.m. local time. It occurred at a depth of 96 kilometers and lasted approximately four minutes. People took to the streets, evacuating homes and buildings.

The number of fatalities—reportedly in the dozens across several cities—and injuries is not yet clear, nor is the precise extent of the damage. However, according to initial reports, the most serious situations are in Manizales, Pereira, and Cali, where “at least 20 buildings” have collapsed, including a university hospital where several children are reportedly trapped beneath the rubble.
