GandCrab Ransomware Authors Announce Shut Down
The authors of the GandCrab ransomware have reportedly announced on underground forums that they are closing their operation after claiming that they have earned over $150 million a year.
Offered as a service, GandCrab made a name for itself starting May last year, when version 3 of the malware was observed breaking Windows 7 systems. Within several months, the threat had adopted the NSA-linked EternalBlue exploit and became one of the most prolific ransomware families out there.
Spreading via phishing emails and mainly focused on end-users, GandCrab has been also observed targeting a Japanese manufacturing firm recently.
Overall a highly successful operation, the GandCrab Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) appears to be heading to its end, screenshots posted on Twitter by security researchers David Montenegro and "Damian" reveal.
Over the weekend, the RaaS operators apparently announced plans to retire, informing all of their customers they should stop spreading GandCrab and do all they can to monetize the existing infections within the following 20 days.
The ransomware authors also warned victims that all of the decryption keys would be erased after 20 days, and that none of the currently encrypted data would be retrievable unless ransoms are paid in the meantime.
While the numbers are questionabe, the RaaS operators also claim that the miscreants involved in GandCrab campaigns over the past year have earned over $2 billion in total. They said in their post that earnings per week averaged $2.5 million.
They also noted that the RaaS brought them over $150 million per year and that they have already managed to launder the money.
What remains to be seen is what will happen with the victims, provided GandCrabβs authors follow through with their plans to close the operation. Decryptors have been released for previous variants of the ransomware, although the authors were quick to update the malware in response.
In the past, decryption keys were released for major ransomware operations, including Petya, Locker, CrySiS, and TeslaCrypt, which has allowed the creation of free tools to help victims easily recover their data.

If you still use the popular open-source VLC Media Player, you might want to uninstall it (at least for now). German security agency CERT-Bund has discovered a critical security flaw in VLC that could be used by attackers for remote code execution or cause a DDoS.
The worst part is that VideoLAN (the team behind VLC) doesnβt have a complete patch at the moment and until it rolls out one, your PC remains vulnerable.
Vulnerability in VLC Media Player
The vulnerability, described in CVE-2019-13615, reads:
βA remote, anonymous attacker can exploit a vulnerability in VLC to execute arbitrary code, create a denial of service state, disclose information, or manipulate files.β
In short, this security flaw can allow hackers to hijack your PC and go through your files.
A fix on the way
Fortunately, there have been no reports of exploitation of this flaw. WinFuture reports that Windows, Linux, and Unix versions of VLC have been affected by the security hole, but the macOS version remains safe.
Nevertheless, it totals up to a huge number of potentially vulnerable systems out there.
VideoLAN has been informed of the issue and the team is currently working on a patch. However, the patch is nearly 60% complete. We will have to wait longer for a fix.
For now, the only way to protect yourself from this flaw is to uninstall VLC and switch to alternative media players.

The new security updates are here to address a race condition (CVE-2019-11599) in Linux kernel when performing core dumps, and an integer overflow (CVE-2019-11487) when referencing counting pages. Both issues affect only Ubuntu 19.04 systems and could allow a local attacker to crash the system by causing a denial of service (DoS attack) or possibly execute arbitrary code.
On Ubuntu 18.04 LTS systems, the new security patch fixes a flaw (CVE-2019-11085) discovered by Adam Zabrocki in Linux kernel's Intel i915 kernel mode graphics driver, which failed to correctly restrict mmap() ranges under certain situations, allowing local attackers to either execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service attack and crash the system.
Moreover, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS systems were affected by a race condition (CVE-2019-11815) discovered in Linux kernel's RDS (Reliable Datagram Sockets) protocol implementation, which is blacklisted by default. If the RDS protocol was enabled, the flaw could allow a local attacker to cause crash the system or execute arbitrary code.
These Linux kernel security updates also address an issue (CVE-2019-11833) discovered in the EXT4 file system, which failed to zero out memory under certain situations, and a problem (CVE-2019-11884) discovered in the Bluetooth Human Interface Device Protocol (HIDP) implementation, which improperly verified strings in certain situations.
These two issues affect both Ubuntu 19.04 and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS systems, and they could allow local attackers to expose sensitive information (kernel memory). The updated Ubuntu 18.04 LTS kernel is also available for users of the Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system series using the HWE (Hardware Enablement) Linux kernel packages from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
Users are urged to update their systems immediately
