A summary of what happened today, Saturday, 10 January, in Tehran
This report unfortunately contains details of protesters being killed and wounded in Iran.
While the internet in Iran has been completely shut down for the third consecutive day and access to mobile phones is also entirely affected by severe outages and disruptions, news of the nationwide protests in Iran is being transmitted only in a limited manner by individuals who are managing to send it out of the country via Starlink satellite internet.
Saturday has been one of the most fervent days of the recent 14 days of protests in Iran’s national uprising, and initial estimates indicate that more than one million people across the country have so far joined this uprising.
Today, several short reports and two short videos from Iran/Tehran have been sent, showing that the number of those killed is extremely high and beyond belief.
Initial figures indicate that the number may even exceed the 4,500 people killed in November 2019.
According to a confirmed report, on Friday night, the bodies of 70 people were transferred to Poursina Hospital in Rasht. Based on this report, the hospital morgue did not have sufficient capacity, and officials demanded 700 million tomans from the families of the victims, under the title of “bullet fee,” in exchange for handing over the bodies of their loved ones.
In Tehran, on Thursday night, about 40 bodies were brought to Imam Khomeini Hospital, and families prevented the bodies of their relatives from being taken away by state ambulances, and clashes occurred as a result. The number of the dead exceeded the capacity of the hospital morgue, and bodies were placed on top of one another in the morgue and prayer hall until morning.
In Tehran and Mashhad, families, fearing the abduction of the bodies of their loved ones (a method that the Islamic Republic has always applied), pulled the bodies out of state ambulances.
Farabi Eye Hospital in Tehran has entered a state of crisis. The number of people with eye injuries caused by shotgun pellets fired at their eyes has reached hundreds.
Meanwhile, in Tehran, several IRGC security bases known as “Imam Ali Security Headquarters,” tasked with suppressing protesters and located in major mosques in Tehran, were set on fire by the people. These mosques were located in the neighborhoods of Pirouzi, Sa’adat Abad, and Pounak.
Also, in several areas of Tehran — in Eslamshahr, Tehranpars, Janat-Abad, Heravi — as well as in Ardabil, several police anti-riot vehicles belonging to the Special Units were set on fire.
In Karaj’s Golshahr area, the building of District 5 Municipality, which was in fact a command center for directing IRGC suppression forces and from whose rooftop shots were fired at protesters, was also set on fire by the people.
In Tehran, during clashes between protesters and suppression forces in Sattarkhan, six Special Unit motorcycles and vehicles belonging to Basij members were set on fire.
In Nasim Shahr, south of Tehran, a police bus was set on fire, disrupting traffic on the Saveh Road.
In Isfahan Province, protesters, chanting “Javid Shah,” took control of parts of Fooladshahr and Yazdanshahr and blocked streets with fire.
In Najafabad, protesters attacked a gathering of Special Units that had assaulted the people’s demonstration by throwing Molotov cocktails, which led to the dispersal of the suppression forces.
In Ekbatan residential complex in Tehran, a large portion of protesters, carrying Iranian lion-and-sun flags and images of the Pahlavi dynasty, have controlled this multi-square-kilometer complex continuously, day and night, for more than two days.
In Mashhad (Seyedi Street), motorcycles and vehicles of the Special Units and police that had attacked the people’s gathering were set on fire.
In Shiraz (Ahmadi neighborhood, Sajjadieh Town, Bani-Hashemi) and in Darab, Fars Province, youths blocked the routes of the enemy’s reinforcement with fires and burned police motorcycles.
