Toomaj Salehi Appears in Court Again; New Charges Added

The court session addressing the charges against protest rapper #Toomaj_Salehi was held in Branch 1 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court on Thursday, April 18th, 2024.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, during this session, which dealt with charges from 2022, two new charges of “assembly and collusion” and “participation in armed rebellion” were added to Mr. Salehi’s previous charges.

Mostafa Nili, Toomaj Salehi’s defense attorney, stated that his lawyers presented their arguments during this session.

Mr. Toomaj Salehi had previously been sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison on charges such as “propaganda against the regime” and “insulting sanctities” in July 2023. The sentence against him was overturned by the Supreme Court and referred back to Branch 1 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court for reconsideration.

Merciless Suppression of Artists Continues in the Islamic Republic: Rapper Toomaj Salehi Sentenced to Execution

The Revolutionary Court of Isfahan has sentenced #Toomaj_Salehi to death on charges of corruption on earth. His lawyer considers this verdict “manifestly conflicting” and contrary to the ruling of the Supreme Court””

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Toomaj Salehi was previously sentenced to six years in prison and other penalties in July 2023 year. He was also detained in November 2022 in connection with nationwide protests

Toomaj Salehi, a rapper from Shahin Shahr, is among the artists who have raised their voices against oppression and injustice in Iran by singing protest songs

Amir Reisian, Toomaj Salehi’s defense attorney, stated: “The Isfahan Revolutionary Court, in an unprecedented move, did not enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding Toomaj Salehi’s 2023 case and instead, by considering this ruling as ‘arshadi’, and emphasizing the court’s independence, sentenced Toomaj Salehi to the harshest punishment, execution.”
