Dear Mildly Interesting subscribers:

We would like to apologise for using this channel like this. We're doing this because we feel this matter is of some concern for all of us as Telegram users.

Telegram recently released a new privacy-focused update. Here's what the update does:

Say Alice and Bob have a normal private chat (not a secret chat), aka PM. Bob can now delete a message sent by Alice from BOTH sides, without Alice's approval.

This means that all of the messages YOU have ever sent and will send in the future are at risk of being deleted forever even for you, by your correspondants. Maliciously, or even just by mistake.

Many people conduct business on Telegram. So much fraud and abuse is now more easily possible. There was no reason for this updateβ€”if people wanted a private, secure conversation that they could delete, that's what Telegram's secret chats are for.

Imagine if someone could delete the emails you wrote to them from YOUR own outbox. Our guess is that you would change email provider immediately. It has been slow and painful work, getting our friends to join Telegram. Today, people are leaving Telegram over an update, and we cannot come to Telegram's defence.

If this update frightens you, and you are against it, please vote AWFUL to this poll.
