The human class I IFN receptor complex which mediates the biological activity of IFN-alpha and IFN-beta also binds IFN-omega.
The human class I IFN receptor complex which mediates the biological activity of IFN-alpha and IFN-beta also binds IFN-omega. Its specific activity in a standard in vitro antiviral assay system is 4 x 10(8) U mg-1; potent antiviral activity against several DNA and RNA viruses has been demonstrated.

Immunomodulatory Role of Interferons in Viral and Bacterial Infections
IFN-ω and IFN-τ are also known, but they remain poorly characterized today due to limited tissue expression, overlapping functions with IFN-α and IFN-β, and species differences [18]. Type I interferon receptors are mainly expressed by T lymphocytes, macrophages, and monocytes [12] where they are induced in infected cells to produce an antiviral state in uninfected cells [18]. A characterization of type I IFN performed by our team showed that most IFN-α contains 52.79-61.78% of hydrophilic amino acids, while IFN-β 60.43%, IFN-ω 56.41%, IFN-ε 57, 69% and IFN-κ 60.39% (Table 1).
