New Jersey joined the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) in August 2022, a multi-state nonprofit that shares voter registration and motor vehicle data across member states primarily to identify movers, duplicates, and deceased voters for list maintenance. The ERIC membership agreement explicitly prohibits members from transmitting any individual record containing documentation or other information indicating the person is a non-citizen of the United States; states must filter known non-citizens from their motor vehicle department data before submission. ERIC itself does not use the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system operated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

In July 2026, Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill publicly disclosed that a software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission system, active from June 2023 through June 2024 under the prior administration, improperly registered approximately 6,600 individuals who had indicated on their driver’s license or ID applications that they were not U.S. citizens. Roughly 400 of those individuals cast ballots in subsequent elections; the state is removing the registrations and has opened an investigation, while the software vendor has disputed sole responsibility for the failure.

As of mid-to-late 2025 reporting, 26 states had or were establishing memoranda of agreement to use SAVE for voter registration checks or list maintenance, leaving approximately 24 states without confirmed public use of the system for those purposes. SAVE queries federal immigration and citizenship databases and returns status information for state officials to act on; the Trump administration later made bulk processing free and expanded search options, though those enhancements have faced ongoing litigation.
